Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Nervous about d&c

So I went in for my f/u u/s and like we suspected - no hb and no growth.  DH leaves for another 3 week shift on Weds so my RE is going to try to get me in for a D&C tomorrow.  I am really nervous about being put under and for the procedure in general.  I am just looking for some reassurance that this will all be OK.

Emotionally, I am having a tougher day than I thought I would.  I acutally had a pretty good wknd, but seeing the little bean via u/s and talking about how to 'deal with the situation' has made me pretty upset again. :(

Re: Nervous about d&c

  • I'm so sorry.  I didn't have a D&C, so I can't speak from experience, but it will be okay.  I hope you're able to get in before your husband has to leave.

  • I'm so sorry you are having such a tough day. All the ups and downs are so hard, and they just kind of creep up don't they. Hugs.

I wasn't put under for my D&C so I don't have any advice there, but I can tell you that after I had it, I felt fine physically. We went for a walk that night. It was important for me to start taking back control of my body, so a walk was a good first step. I hope they are able to schedule it for you while your husband is with you.

Let us know how it goes.

  • I am so sorry for your loss. I had my first and hopefully last D&C this past Friday. Everything went as well as it possibly could. The last time I had a surgery where I had to be put under, I could remember counting back from 100. For this procedure I was talking to my OB one minute and the next thing I new I was waking up in a recovery room. The actual procedure took less than 15 minutes. That evening I was very tired and groggy, but felt ok. The rest of the weekend I had light bleeding/spotting and some light cramping, nothing too bad. The emotional recovery is obviously much slower and more painful. I hope your procedure and physical recovery go as smoothly as mine. I am sending you prayers.

  • I had a D&C this morning. I was nervous and anxious about the whole surgery but now I actually feel pretty good, physically anyway. I'm happy to have it all behind me. Now the healing process can officially begin... I sorry about your loss. I know there are no words that will help right now. PM me if you want/need to.
  • Thanks ladies.  I know talking about your own experience isn't always easy.  I appreciate your willingness to share to ease my anxiousness. xo

  • Sorry for your loss.

I was super nervous about my d&c on May 27.  It was my first and hopefully my last and I had never had surgery before.  So I was very nervous about the idea of being put under.

It turns out that as soon as I moved beds and felt the warm fluid hit my veins, I was out.  The last thing I remember is moving beds, the next thing I remember was waking up in the recovery room.

I had little spotting or bleeding for 2 or 3 days and then it started full force on the 4th day and lasted for about 2 weeks. Some nights I did pass some clots and bleed pretty heavily but the doctor said that was normal.   The cramps just lasted through the weekend but other than that, I worried too much.

Good luck, but I am sure everything will be fine.

  • I am so sorry for your loss.  I have had 3 D&Cs and I remember being so nervous the first time.  I had never been under anesthesia before and it scared me, too.  It turned out that I had nothing to be nervous about.  The procedure is short and the recovery is quick.  I had a little cramping after the procedure which the nurse gave me intravenous painkillers for.  After that I didn't have any more cramping and didn't need to even take a Tylenol.  I bled off and on for 2.5 weeks which is normal.

It's normal to be nervous, but you will be fine.  Good luck to you.

  • I'm sorry for your loss. *hugs*

I had a D&C a little over two weeks ago. After the sugery, I spent around an hour in recovery before I was allowed to leave even though I woke up and was lucid pretty quickly. Physically it wasn't too bad. They gave me pain medication but I only took it once (at home the night of the surgery) and after that there was no pain.

    Sending good thoughts your way.

  • The emotional roller coaster just keeps going, right? There will be good and bad days so hold on for the ride!

I had a D&C after a VERY long and drawn out miscarriage that couldn't complete on it's own. I was very worried about being put under, since I haven't had anything like that before, but I promise you it was not bad at all. The whole thing took about 20 minutes tops. I was in recovery for a few hours, just sleeping and waking back up, but it wasnt bad. By the second day I basically felt normal other than a little more tired than usual---but no pain.

Hang in there, try to think about this procedure being a good thing because it will give you closure and help you to move on physically, so that you can also heal emotionally.

    Hugs

  • I'm so sorry for your loss.  I had a d&e over 3 weeks ago.  The procedure itself is nothing...it was over in 10 mins.  The anasth. wore off quickly, too. The worst part for me was getting an IV.  I hate needles!  The emotional aspect is more difficult than the physical.  Like mrs.julia.goolia said...think of the procedure as a good thing because it will give you closure.  That's how I looked at it.  Good luck!

  • I'm sorry for your loss. I had a d/c a week before my birthday due to an incomplete abortion, this Feb. I was miscarrying for 3 weeks before they'd even schedule it, and was about 7 weeks along. My boyfriend  wasn't able to attend, because we still lived 5 hours from eachother at the time. He had also worked under State of Em., he's full time Nat. Guard and needed to check on his kids at home-three hrs away.  I was very nervous, like you are. When they gave me the sedative, it worked pretty fast. The next thing I remember I was in the recovery room. I was an out paitent, listed for a short stay, so my sedative wasn't as strong. It's still a little scary going under, but we were able to text when I they returned my phone, so it was like he was there. Hang in there, sounds like you have a supportive husband and be prepared to take time to heal physically and emotionally. It took me awhile before I could even go past baby clothes without crying, but everyone copes differnetly. The good news is, we are preg. again, and I'm about 12 weeks. Good luck, I hope this helps and remember it's ok to cry.

  • Many ladies have share their experience already so I will just briefly say that my D&C was not at all painful and the anesthesia wore off very quickly. I went to the hospital at 1 and was home by 4.

Thoughts and prayers to you tomorrow.
