Re: Clicky: How do you feel about overnight summer camp?
I voted for age 10+ but now that I think about it, I'd send them at 8-9 too. Probably just for a week at first and then add time as they got older and if they wanted to.
I have many friends that grew up going to camp and have lifelong friends b/c of it. They later went on to work at those camps.
I only did an overnight camp once and I loved it but I was a competitive gymnast so I couldn't be away other then gymnastics camp (which I did do).
After I quit, I worked all through high school and college at camps - best summer job ever!!
Well I should state that I am Jewish and this is kind of what we do, sort of a right of passage..>I went to Jewish summer camp it was reform and layed backBut I think more for kids up north..I just had a conversation with one of my mom friends here in Fla and she said they didn't do it as much here..But she was thinking about sending her kid up north to MA or NY for camp next year..
I started going away to summer camp going into second grade..I only went for 2 wks at that time but went for almost 10 yrs. The longest I ever went for was for a month, We had a summer house in Maine so we would spend August there...I LOVED camp..my brother LOVED camp we went to sister/brother camps..I also went to day camp as a younger kid..I NEVER stayed home during the summer..
DH NEVER went to camp even day camp..he just hung out at his grandparents pool all summer or got a job. I think he did go to soccer camp once but hated it. He doesn't really get the summer camp thing but after me talking abt it so much he is totally on board!
We will be sending Jake to summer camp when he is older even if we are living in Fla (his granparents will be close by)..probably to the same one that my Bro went to. Camp instills so many good values and REALLY lets kids be kids swimmin, boating, arts and crafts, dirt, learning how to live with other people and take care of yourself...and who doesn't love to NOT shower for like 2 wks (gotta love boy camps!)..I was fully prepared to go to college after going to camp for 10 yrs! I LOVE CAMP!!
I went away to Girl Scout summer camp starting when I was 10. I was nervous about it first and was upset the first day (I was super shy) but got over it. I ended up going for about 4 or 5 years in a row and then went for a few years as a counselor. It was so much fun.
I also went to 4th grade camp when I was 9 years old. It was through school (so all the kids from my class would go) and it was for a week.
mh is already planning the vacations we will take when our kids go to sleep away camp
my sister and i went to an 8 week sleep away camp from age 7-14. we both loved it and are still great friends with many of the girls we went to camp with. it was an amazing experience and i am actually a little jealous that my kids get to go to camp and i don't!
she can go when she really wants to, but it will NOT be the "bible camp" I got sent to. holyjeebus, the naughty things I learned from going to that "church" camp. It's true what say about those catholic girls. Well, er, at least the ones in MY camp. lol.
Plus, looking back, there were about 3 of us that were TOTALLY preyed upon, and we had NO idea. It was a "guy in thechurch band" who had to have been 35+, and he was chasing our tails all over the place. TOTALLY inappropriate looking back, but I had NO idea what it was at the time. It scares to me to think about how flattered I was, and not the least bit alarmed some "old dude" was paying VERY nice attention to me. (obviously this was MY camp experience, and not that of everyone else's. disclaimer, blah blah blah)
