Cloth Diapering

need advice on CD - sorry if this has been covered and sorry if I am rambling!

I apologize in advance if this has been asked 100 times, but I am wondering what your opinions are on using an insert and cover vs. all-in-ones once baby is out of the newborn diapers.  I know it's personal preference, but any advice to keep in mind would be great!

I am thinking right now of getting 2 dozen fitted diapers, 1 dozen prefolds, and 4-6 covers for newborn - and then buying 24 (at least) Grovia all in ones.  Does this sound reasonable?

 Or,

There is a local lady with a small business who makes her own cloth diapers and sells them - she is selling 36 - 100% cotton liners and 6 covers (diaper pail and wet sack) for $250 (canadian $$) - I'm just not sure if I want to use the inserts when baby is big enough for all in ones.

Thoughts?

  • Actually, it's partly personal preference and it's partly what fits your baby best.  Since you won't know that until the baby is here, the best advice any of us can give you is to not invest all your money in one type of diaper.  I know that's a frustrating answer when you're trying to plan - sorry!

  • I know that some people do not use all in ones because they take forever to dry.  I was talking to someone who would have to put them through several dry cycles.  Her diapers actually got mildew in them because they weren't getting dry all the way through.  Many people who like the idea of AIOs get pocket diapers because you can take out the absorbant part so they dry quicker and clean easier.

Ditto. I know you want to get all your ducks in a row and have everything figured out, I feel the same way, but every baby is different and will have changing needs as they grow. I wanted to dive head first in to one brand so everything matched and was easily organized and then I realized that wasn't going to be cost efficient if the brand I chose never fit the baby properly.

For now, our stash has a solid foundation of prefold and covers. We have one or two AIO, AI2, pockets, fitteds, one-size and sized from various brands to try out. Once we find a groove we plan on investing more money in to building a long term stash of our favorite styles.

  • We've gone the fitted and prefold with covers route, as well as some gdiapers with homemade cloth liners, and I love it! To me it feels like there is less stuff to drag around with us when we're out, and it doesn't feel like more work than the AIO.

    Also, hello fellow BCer!

Hello!  Nice to see someone from the area. I like your plan.

I am thinking -Fitted/prefolds with covers to get through the newborn stage and then I'll just try a few others out before diving in. Its just so hard not to be so "prepared!!" So excited to be cloth diapering though.

This. And we disliked fitteds for the nb stage.

We did GMD prefolds/thirsties Duo covers. Now we do bumgenius pockets and bumgenius elementals, mostly, with some cheap sunbaby diapers for filler.
