What kind of formula do you plan on using?

Hey ladies

I was just wondering what kind of formula you plan on using (if any) for the first timers and also what the 2nd time Mom's use--there are just so many kinds that it's throwing me for a loop--any thoughts/opinions/reviews would be great, thanks!

  • I BF for about 6 months but when I had supply issues we switched to Similac formula and my son handled it fine!

  • There's a chance I won't be able to BF so if that's the case, I'll be using Gerber Good Start for him as a newborn.

I've heard it's the most similar to breast milk.

I'm hoping to BF this time, but with DS he was on formula from about 8 wks on--and we used Parent's Choice. We used the "gassiness" one, but he spit up with it, so we switched to their "sensitive" type and it took care of the spitting up overnight. Used it up until we switched to cow's milk around 10-11 months.

  • Enfamil (only because Target makes a store brand version that my BFF swears by for her LO & formula is expensive enough, but being a (soon to be) single mom i'm already dreading the expense). Fingers crossed that LO doesn't have too many (or any) sensitivities & my plan will work :)

  • I wouldn't recommend stocking up on any formulas. DD was FF from the beginning and she had a lot of issues. I believe we switched her formula about 7 or 8 times and ended up having to use the Similac Isomil Advanced formula, but only the premade liquid kind. She couldn't handle any bubbles in the formula, I couldn't even premake it at night and refrigerate it and let the bubbles settle overnight.

  • Started on Simalac, after a few months we switched to COSTCO formula... it saved us a fortune and the switch didn't cause any problems. I also swear by their wipes.

Seriously don't waste money on the "name brand" formula. Target makes an Up&Up brand for about every different kind of Similac, for about half the price.

  • After BFing for about 6 months for both boys, we used Gerber Good Start and Good Start 2.

  • I've used the Target brand formula for gassy babies for both of my kids.  I agree with not stocking up on anything since you never know if your baby will need a special kind but I highly recommend buying generic instead of the name brands.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • We started out using similac with DS after I needed to supplement while BFing... They had a recall when he was about 7 months or so... We were going to switch to enfimil but they were sold out, so target it was... and BOY was it FABULOUS!! If we have to use formula again, target it will be...

As for types, I wouldn't stock up as we tried 3 different kinds with DS before realizing he had a dairy issue and switched him to Soy...

  • I plan to BF for 6-9 months, but if needed, my plan is to substitute with Enfamil formula

  • Every baby is different, so I would wait and kind of trial and error with formula. Luckily, DH works for Abbott, who makes all of the Similac products, so we get a pretty good discount on formula. We were lucky that DD did well with Similac Advance and we didn't have to try any others. She was fed breastmilk until I had to go back to work, then we supplemented, and then my supply vanished and we had no problems with the transistion. Actually, her poop stayed the same breastmilk consistency, even as she was exclusively FF.

yep, i never understood why people spend the extra money on name brand formulas (unless they were using the formula checks they sent). all of it is regulated and is the same thing. don't waste your money!

i wasn't able to bf and we used the target/walmart gentle formula.

  • We used Enfamil with my first two babies, but planning on trying Similac first with this one. Also, I agree with PP- I wouldn't recommend stocking up on any before baby arrives. Those little tummies can be very picky!
