Clicky: Flying with DD this week...

...and mlf thinks I should just wear her because they have everything I need there: stroller, car seat, leash, etc. (I know, I'm annoyed with myself for even posting this.  Just humor me.)

Keep in mind that I generally have back pain issues.  I wore her yesterday for about 20 minutes and it was ok- my back didn't hurt or anything.  We have an 1.5 hour layover and she'll be in my lap on the plane.  Is it going to kill my back walking through the airport?   Its going to be a PITA to get a stroller/car seat through security but after that it might be nice to have somewhere for her to sit other than on me.  Traveling light is nice, though...

I also saw this thing that is basically a strap that attaches the car seat to your carry on.   https://www.amazon.com/Traveling-Toddler-Seat-Travel-Accessory/dp/B000JHN3AS  It looked interesting and if I got that I wouldn't have to take the stroller.

Help!

  • i'd personally take a small stroller.  easy to fold and frankly is less of a pita than the long A wrap i have or the baby bjorn once its off.

  • I'd get a cheap umbrellas stroller. I cannot wear Olivia for more than 20 minutes, and only then when she's in just the right mood. She prefers the stoller and my back prefers the stroller. I wouldn't want to take a whole jogging stroller through the airport, but I wouldn't want to be without a stroller either. You can get an umbrella stroller for like $20.
  • I voted citymini but I change my mind to "Other." I never 'wore' my kids and I don't think I would want to try it for the first time when I was traveling with her. I would look into getting an umbrella stroller. We spent $100 on one and I thought it was crazy but we use that more than we ever used the big 'ole jogger. They're so easy to take and carry along. You can fold it down one handed (holding baby in the other) if you need to do so quickly.
  • I have a really bad back too but haven't had issues in the airport wearing V.  It's a little easier than managing all the different bags and stuff with the stroller.  However, if you take something else, i would DEFINITELY take the city mini over the whole carseat and snap n go.

  • It sounds like you have the baby jogger city mini stroller.  If so, just take it with you!  That thing is awesome, and you can open and close it one-handed!  I have one, and if I was in your position I would just take it with me. If you want further validation, just page Mrs.Wildman.  She has traveled with that stroller repeatedly.  She also recommended this gate check bag that it evidently fits into perfectly.  I haven't bought it yet but I plan to as soon as we book our next flight.

    Ditto.

  • I would take a stroller b/c they will make you unhook her from the carrier to go thru security.  Then you will have to reload her into carrier.  Plus with your layover it would be nice to push soemthing instead of lugging her on you for that time period.

    Have a safe flight.

  • I have a super small, super light umbrella stroller that you are welcome to borrow if you want. It's a cheapo thing that will probably fit in the overhead storage.
  • dont buy an umbrella stroller- just come get mine if you need one.  i have a maclaren i havent used in like 3 years.  lol
  • I've found that my back does fine with a side sling, whereas as the e-r-g-o or bb kills me.

YUP. You can borrow my bag too if you decide to take the Citi Mini. I'm curious now though regarding the new rules about gate checking strollers - if the Citi Mini will fly or not... That will only affect you if you fly AA though. Part of me is tempted to get an umbrella stroller for my trip, but it really seems like a waste in that the CM is SO light and easy to use.

I am flying Delta.  I checked the website and apparently strollers are still OK to check at the gate.

The only reason I was thinking the snapngo/car seat is because sometimes they let you take the seat onboard if there is an empty seat available for LO even if you don't buy a ticket.

  • Every time I have flown with C by myself (probably about 5-6 times) I have worn him.  I have found that it is easiest to have my hands free and to carry as little with me as possible.  So, I would basically just stick him in the sling in the front, and have my backpack diaper bag on my back.  Everyone is also very friendly and helpful if they see you have your hands full.  Good luck!

  • I also have a bad back and I used my mei tai when I flew with L when he was 11 months.  We had major time in the airport, and it wasn't that bad.  I liked being able to have my hands free with him.

And, you don't always have to take them off when you go through security.  I think with an umbrella stroller it'll just be a hassle because you can't store anything underneath.  jmo though.

  • I voted for the strappy thing b/c i love it :)

if you are taking your car seat anyway, it's easy to attach it, you can have the kiddo in it if you want.

so you can easily take her through the airport with it, or check it with you luggage without having to have another thing to wheel around.

I always carry H, even now I bring my babyhawk and carry him unless he insists on walking :) it's faster and it's not like you are walking that long even with a layover, you'll starp her on and go find somewhere to sit.

so, buy the strappy thing for the car seat and wear her :)

  • I didn't vote, but I would either borrow the maclaren (they are sturdy enough that you can do things one-handed) or buy the strappy thing :) I think a 1.5 hr layover is long enough that it could get wearisome carrying her all that time. for me the layovers are the hardest part. and w/a stroller or carseat w/you...you have somewhere for her to sit during the layover (other than you :)).

you can also go to the gate w/carseat and wait til the last minute to see if there is an empty seat so you can get the carseat on, and then if not, gate check it. i like to lug the carseats on bc my kids have slept when i have brought the carseat(s) on, and haven't slept when i tried the lapchild thing. good luck and safe travels!!!
