Food Allergy

Food cravings

Just wondering. For those of you who either are nursing and those who don't keep allergens in the home, how do you handle cravings? For example: Dairy was the first thing I cut out way back in September. Every once in awhile I get longing pangs for something super cheesy. It gets so bad that I get depressed over it, it doesn't last long, but it still happens. No substitutes are good enough because IMO nothing tastes like the real thing (although in some cases, the alternatives are actually tastier but thats not my point). How do you guys handle it? I know I'm doing the best possible thing for my child by cutting out all these things from my diet, but there are times when I just feel so overwhelmed by what I can and can't have. KWIM? I'm pretty used to it after 10 months, but I'm not alone, am I? Others have bad cravings too, right?

Re: Food cravings

  • I had cravings all the time while nursing. I gave in once to pizza and cake and had to pump and dump for days. I cried every time i had to dump the milk and the was the last time i cheated.

Currently my house is milk/egg/soy/peanut free and i get to indulge at work all the time, but i do avoid nuts b/c that somehow stays on you a lot longer.

I do think you should have a desert night.. a night after your child goes to sleep and you go in the back deck or on the front stoop and have some yummy desert. Have your DH go and get it so it never goes into the house.   This way you have something to look forward to and you're not completely depriving yourself.

neither did i.  I had to throw out 100's of ounces when i found out about his allergy and by then i was just making enough for the day.  So he was already on alementum formula at night.

If he still eats at night.. substitute at night for couple of weeks w/ formula (if he can have it) and then pump at night and create a stash.. so when you're ready to indulge, you'll have some.

i feel like breast fed baby will take formula at night time rather than day --i guess they are so out of it that they just don't care what they get.  I had a hard time giving my son formula during the day at first.

that sounds delish!!!!! i might have to do that tonight at home for me and my son.

Honestly, if i knew about half of the deserts that i know about now, i would not have any cravings.  I craved ice cream a lot and i wish i knew there was so delicious that is soy/milk free.  I was so clueless at first that i didn't know about anything and what's out there.

  • I am in the same boat as you too!! I make rice cream, it's not the best in the world but it is a nice treat! I will then puree some organic berries on top yummy!!!!!
  • Desserts we're good on. I have discovered ice cream, cookies, cake, even whipped cream I can eat.

Recently I discovered that by using an Indian sauce that I can have stir-fry.

I've been okay with pizza using daiya and I do lots of fun stuff like egg salad with eggs (no egg allergy).

Okay, so slices of good cheese I miss. There is no substitute!

  • I can do pretty well with substitue desserts- mostly because I'm trying almost every safe recipie I can find that sounds good.

What I wouldn't give for a giant slice of delivery pizza though....there's a no-cheese roasted veggie pizza at TJ's that's actually really good- but so not the same.  And we went to a party at a winery over the weekend.  I almost cried over the cheese platters (probably because I was drinking wine on an empty stomach because cheese was on all of the food).....
