I don't know why this bugs me...

My little brothers are quite a bit different than I am - I have my PhD and a successful career, they both barely graduated HS and one of them you might call a hippie. My hubby is also a PhD and thin. I've had both brothers tell me that our baby is going to be a scrawny nerd. They call me a nerd all of the time, but for some reason it bothers me that they would make fun of my baby! I'm already a protective mother I guess.

  • i wouldnt let it bother you, nerd make the world go around, losers laugh because they have nothing better to do but laugh and make fun of people.

  • I would just reply, "Yep, a skinny nerd that will finish college and will know how to bath himself without using pachouli oil."

Don't let them get to you, you have a successful career, a husband with a PhD, and a cute babe on the way.  They are just being petty.

  • As I was told by my second graders last week, "nerd is not a mean thing to say to someone it means you're smart."  It was news to me, but all 27 of them agreed!

  • haha, thanks guys. I always take the high road with my little brothers - but if they are going to make fun of my baby already, they might just start getting made fun of by me for their lifestyles!

  • I have a maternity shirt that says "Geek Inside" on the front down where the protruding (sp?)  belly is.  It's perfect for us because my husband is a HUGE geek (software engineer and good at it)  I tell people if he comes out a geek and is successful and makes as much as his dad does, I'll be a happy momma! Tell them that, that should shut them up!

:-) Honestly, the words nerd and geek don't always bother me - but they do from my brothers, especially the one, b/c I know how negatively he sees the word. I seriously have always just ignored his comments towards me, because I do like my life and am proud of where I am...but don't make fun of my baby!!

Yup!  Our babies might be a little nerdy with two PhD parents,  but that's not a bad thing!  I never asked you,  what is yours in?  Your husbands?

Mine will be history, and DH is genetics.

Mine is in Educational Psychology (from a program focused on research methods/statistics/testing), and DH is a mathematician.

  • It's hard not to get in defensive mode when it comes to our LO's. My mom and I have this thing where we try and come up with names to call each other, and we get a lot of laughs out of it. BUT it was everything I could do not to lose my sh!t on her when she started doing it to DD.

  • So this whole 'scrawny nerd" thing came up on facebook, so all of our family can see it. I just had to keep myself from responding "maybe my baby can help you with math". I didn't do it...b/c I really don't want to start something!! Rather, I made the comment that it's nice this baby already has an uncle who thinks so highly of him. I also let him know that while I personally see nothing wrong with the word nerd, the word scrawny is almost certainly negative and I don't appreciate it.
  • my brothers make asinine comments about my unborn child, too. i can totally empathize. why must younger brothers say such dumb things?
