Daycare drop offs are so hard

K started daycare last week. She is 9 mths old now. Now I think I should have started when she was 6 mths old already.:(  She started at only 3 hrs every morning. Mon,Tues she tried to do okie. Wed was not bad either. Thurs was terrible. Friday she had a drs appt so we skipped. Today was just terrible, crying, sobbing, red nose... my mom tried to stay over for a bit. Then I decided to pick her up too, because I think either of us staying back makes it worse for her. How do I make this better for her and for me?

  • In all honesty?  Leave, and leave quickly.

My DC has a window that faces the parking lot.  Without fail, by the time I got back out there and peeked in, they've both moved on.

This almost exactly. With the one exception that instead of a window, we have cameras in the rooms at our DC that all play on video screens by the entrance. By the time I've left his room and walked to the video screens, he is happily playing and just fine without me! :)

  • The best thing to do is hand her over, say goodbye, and leave.  In my experience, Dylan was fine within a couple of minutes.  Now that he's been going for 5 months or so (3 days a week), he walks right in, sits down and eats breakfast, waves and tells me "bye".  He loves it now!  It'll get better as she gets used to her new routine.  Hang in there!

  • Ditto everyone else!  That, and mondays always seem to be a little tougher on us than other days...they get used to being at home with us again.  (((HUGS)))

This. Oh, SO this. You only make it worse (for her AND especially for YOU) to prolong the good bye. I know you might think that an extra hug or kiss would make it better, but it never does. The only thing that helps is redirecting their attention and that only happens once you're gone.

Drop-offs will get better in about 2-3 weeks. Then they'll get hard again, then easy again.

We still have the occasional rough day with G now, and he's been in daycare for over 2 yrs now. Yet, at the end of the day he doens't want to come home :)
