  Organic mattress is the way to go, especially with newborns.

  We have also been very happy with our Naturpedic.  While it's not the cheapest on the market, we believe it's one of the most important things we bought for our daughter.

  I didn't buy an organic mattress, but I tried to buy it a several months in advance and let it air out/off gas before LO's arrival...plus it was then several more months before she was in the crib at all.  To off gas, I had it in various places including the hot garage, out in the sun on the patio a few times, and only right at the end in the crib.

  Hubby and I are looking at organic mattresses and soybean foam mattresses. We haven't decided one yet though.

  We have a 'mini' sized crib so it was kinda hard for us to find one. We were debating between the naturepedic and this colgate one: https://www.amazon.com/Colgate-Mattress-Eco-Friendly-Portable-Mini/dp/B0035LDDA0/ref=br_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I12SR0OFMMLCQV&colid=3CRMVQK4UO86Y   ...the naturepedic one didn't get that great of reviews and was a bit more $$, so we decided to register for the colgate one. It's not organic, but I feel like it's better than some other options.

  I just bought a natural latex one made by PureRest. I haven't used it yet so can't really say, but it seems really nice. It's covered in organic cotton and wool, so no plastics at all. It wasn't cheap but I'm hoping we get a lot of use out of it! Good luck.
