Diapers not to buy...

I was bored and went over to the Pampers board to see what all that was about. I saw a few negative posts about Pampers Dry Max, but this one is by far the most disturbing:

Re: Diapers not to buy...

  • We totally avoid pampers for exactly this reason - only Huggies for us. I'm thinking of even trying cloth diapers again with #2 - tried and failed with DD because we started cloth when she was newborn and it was just too overwhelming for me.

  • DD has super sensitive skin, and when she was a baby, Pampers were the only diaper she could wear without breaking out.

Before they officially debuted Dry Max, pampers started sneaking Dry Max into regular packages.  We couldn't figure out what was going on, because DD's butt started getting red for seemingly no reason.  (the only difference we noticed in the diapers was that some of the diapers in the pack we had didn't have the 'netting' that most pampers had - we figured it was just a production error, it never occurred to us that they were actually different diapers)

Eventually, everywhere that the diaper touched her was BRIGHT red and raw (picture a diaper shaped area that had blood seeping through raw skin).  Her pediatrician too called it a chemical burn.

I called pampers and was told about Dry Max, but was also told that the diapers were 'perfectly safe' and that they had no other reports of problems (ha!)

We switched to 7th generation (latex & chlorine free) and have been very pleased with them.  We also use cloth at times.

DD is potty trained now, but we would buy 7th generation through Amazon.com - using their auto subscribe service.  Once a month, a case of diapers would get shipped to us, and participation in their auto-subscribe service earned us free shipping on almost everything else via Amazon Prime - pretty slick!  (and I found Amazon's prices cheaper than BRU - the only retailer near us that carried 7th generation)

  • We CD so we rarely deal with disposable diapers, but I refuse to buy any product with the Pampers name on it any more.  I don't think they are a trustworthy company.  Huggies and Target Up and Up are my back up disposables for travel.  We use Huggies or Kirkland wipes.  I used Pampers Swaddlers for the first week or so on DS but won't repeat this time.  I've even considered asking the hospital not to put Pampers products on the new baby (that's what they use).  DH thinks I'm a bit crazy

This, exactly.  We had issues with everything- even cloth- but Pampers have consistently been the one type of diaper that hasn't caused my daughter to get a rash.  I tend to use the Baby Dry more than the Cruisers with the Dry Max, but even when we do use them her skin is fine.  Different kids have different skin, you just have to find what works for yours.

  • DD2 had horrible reactions to lots of diapers. We finally ended up doing cloth for close to a year. After that we were able to switch to Kroger brand diapers and not have any problems. We'll probably stick to Kroger, especially since they now have a chlorine free version for this baby.

Oh, and if you cloth, I have a friend that took cloth diapers with her when her 2nd baby was born. That child never had a disposable diaper on her, ever. The nurses were happy to comply with the parents wishes, so you might ask if its possible to do the same.

  • Hmm.... Well I am not familiar with the dry max pamper diaper but I used nothing but pampers on my daughter and did not have this problem. I'm not sure if using the same diaper rash cream from her first child is the best idea but that is just me. I know she mentions this b/c she is basically saying it could not be the diaper rash cream causing the rash but the only problem is, every child is different. Just b/c her first child did not develop a rash from the diaper rash cream doesn't mean her other children will not.

I was also a little curious about this subject after reading this so I googgled it. I did not dig too far into the subject but many of the sites I came across said the recall of Max Dry was a rumor and that there was no research to prove the max dry was causing a chemical burn.

From what I know, a chemical burn looks different than diaper rash. Also, a chemical burn bubbles up so not sure how a chemical burn could be mistaken for a severe diaper rash.

It could be possible her child was just having a allergic reaction to the diaper. Now I am not saying the chemical burn is a lie but just thinking there is also other possibilities as well.

  • I do not use pampers but I wanted to add that I have used huggies for all of my girls and there was one case that I got a few months ago that had my girls in rashes within hours. I used a diff box and it didnt happen again. I feel like any diaper can have a bad batch slip through the cracks.

  • I've never let a Dry Max diaper touch DD's butt, so I personally never had an issue.  My nephew and a good friend's son both had bad chemical burns.  I was an exclusive Pampers user until they switched to Dry Max.  I even went out and bought all the Dry Max free ones I could find because I really liked them.  I now use Huggies and have always been happy with them.

People have obviously had issues with the Dry Max and if Pampers had reacted differently, my attitude would likely be more similar to this.  I might have tried them out as our sposie standby.  If they had apologized for any reaction that babies were having and said "all babies react differently and we're sorry if your baby is allergic to this new product maybe you should try XXX instead" or something along those lines I would feel differently.  But, Pampers saying that it is not the diapers causing these issues and that parents are doing something wrong makes them seem pretty dishonest to me.  I don't do business with companies that I know are dishonest.

  • Pampers Baby Dry are the only disposable diapers that don't give my son terrible diaper rash. That particular diaper does not have dry max though.  The dry max ones gave him a burn like rash.

  • thanks for this post.  We used Pampers with DD the whole time, but I am skeptical this time around since they have put the dry max in all of the products.  good to read all the comments!

  • I get that kids each can have different reactions, allergies, etc, but that was just scary.  Especially the pics in the link - sorry I don't recall who posted that.  I never thought about the chemicals in diapers before. I want to do cloth for the economical and environmental reasons, and this just adds to it. I hope those babies don't have scars!

    ^^ This^^

Clearly, some parents are having trouble with these diapers.  Maybe it's as simple as an allergic reaction, maybe it's worse than that.  Either way, for Pampers as a company to answer these complaints like every single one is the first time they are hearing about it is ridiculous.  What ever the cause, this is a WELL KNOWN complaint at this point.  They really need to stop pretending that it's never happened to anyone.  On top of that, to be completely unwilling to even look into it and to immediately blame the parents for being neglectful is absolutely unacceptable and unforgivable.  Any one who has ever worked in customer service for 10 minutes would know this is not the way to answer a customer complaint.

I'm not Pampers target market anyway, since I don't put toxins on my baby and go for greener products than Pampers chooses to make, however, even if they DID comeout with a greener safer option, I will never buy from this company, ever.  Like others have said, they have lost consumer trust and just don't care.

I'm assuming you just mean Pampers.  They are part of P&G which is the largest consumer packeged goods company in the world, so I doubt you are using none of their products, i.e. Crest, Gillette, Tide, Duracell, Luvs, Pantene, Cover Girl, Bounty, etc.

This...I have not had any problems with them.  They are the only brand that goes up to size 7 and will fit my big boy.
