Deswaddling

How many of you ladies have done it?  How/when did you stop?  Did you go cold turkey or some other method (tell what it is)?

We still swaddle.  DD is not rolling yet but I figure we will need to stop around then but I want to be prepared!

Re: Deswaddling

  • A month or so ago DS just started to hate being swaddled. I thought it was because he was getting too big for the swaddle we had so we bought a bigger one and he still hated it, fussed any time he was in it so we just stopped using it one night. He hasn't used one since.

All I have to say is GOOD LUCK!! I posted about this last night on 3-6 (link) and we didn't make it through the night without swaddling :( I've "heard" that they will pretty much tell you when they are done being swaddled but I'm not so sure I buy that Tongue Tied

    ETA: pp I'm sooooo jealous!

I saw your post and that made me think of it.  I thought here I would get more info about a LO my DD's age but I read those too.  Thanks!

  • we stopped swaddling DS's arms around 4 weeks.  He would grunt and try to push them out, waking himself up anyway.  You could start there.  We still swaddle his legs for naps and use a sleepsack without the swaddle at night.

  • We stopped swaddling arms 2 weeks ago. The first couple of nights he woke up a couple of times, but actually put himself back to sleep. Making A&A blankets escape proof was getting too hot and I just wanted to start working on sleeping without "crutches."

  • We're still using the swaddle with the Halo sleep sacks, but DD has been getting her arms out for the past few days.  Luckily, she hasn't been waking up any more than usual (usually just once during the night).  But when I go to pick her up and her arms are out, her little hands are cold :(  She doesn't seem to mind though.  And I don't mind still swaddling her for now.

  • My LO started breaking out of both types of velcro swaddles we had and even the double "wiggle proof" swaddle method. I thought maybe it was time to try and go cold turkey. He usually sleeps 9-10 hours straight and without the swaddle, he woke up twice in 2 hours. I swaddled him again and he slept 8 1/2 hours. Clearly, he's not ready yet, but from talking with my friends with kids, they didn't start sleeping w/o a swaddle until they were 5-6 months old so we still have some time.

  • I tried a couple weeks ago trying to put DD to sleep without a swaddle for daytime naps. After many days of going up to settle her 6 times in 3 hours I gave up. She now is back to sleeping with a swaddle for both daytime and nighttime sleeps.

I just don't think DD is ready yet.

  • we had to give up the woombie last week and i am pretty sure i teared up. i woke up one morning and DS had rolled over, face planted, thrown up, and then stayed face down in it. luckily DH was awake and saw it on the video monitor (he wasn't making any noise).

so, we had to go cold turkey and it hasn't been hell but it hasn't been the easiest transition. he's now in a long sleeve onesie and the halo sleep sack. he likes it just fine but still flails his arms around and it will wake him up. i think he actually wakes up a lot during the night but just doesn't cry because he's been taking much longer naps during the day.

he loves to roll to his side so he pretty much does that before we're even out of his room. the problem occurs if he rolls back onto his back, arms go everywhere and he's cranky. if he rolls on his stomach, his arm is trapped under his body and he's cranky.

    i miss the woombie  :(
