Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction

Anyone heard of it?  I have been having pain in the pelvic region when walking for a long time or attempting to run (a very slow jog!).  While pregnant, I had a hard time getting in and out of cars and bed because of pain while spreading my legs.  After a long walk, I would hardly be able to walk up and down stairs.  I mentioned this to one of the doctors in my practice and he dismissed it as normal pain during pregnancy.

Fast forward to 3 months PP, I was still having the pain.  I went for 2 walks in one day, forget it, I was in tears the following day.  I mentioned this to my obgyn because I happened to have an annual a few weeks ago.  She referred me to a physical medicine and rehab specialist.  I think I'm going to have to get an MRI or xray to see what's going on down there.  I'm just frustrated because I was so active before pregnancy and I have 9 lbs/ 1 pant size to go.  I know running will get me there, but I can't!

Anyone else have workout frustrations? What's limiting you?

Re: Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction

  • I have/had it. But mine has got way better pp. I would try getting one of the support belts for your hips if it is still bothering you. They are basically a tensor bandage for around your hips. They are supposed to really help.

  • i had it for the last 4 months of pregnancy, but it went away immediately. i agree with the above post - try a support belt. they are pretty cheap on amazon. mine was never that painful though, so i hope you do see a specialist. hopefully it's nothing serious, good luck!

  • a friend of mine who is a PT recommended one of the belts as well.  I just don't like that this extreme pain (which is only exercised induced at this point) is sticking around! Did either of you do anything special during your delivery because of it? I've read that if you have it, you shouldn't use stirrups, etc.  Of  course, the doctor dismissed my pain in one of my appointments so I never brought it up again.  I have no idea if it was more painful during delivery because I had an epi.  Hopefully I didn't cause more damage.  I just wish my doc would've listened to me in the first place!

  • I had it my whole pregnancy. I was absolutely miserable. Couldn't roll over in bed, sit a certain way, my back would click when I walked, couldn't get in/out of cars easily... My drs also said it was normal even though I couldn't even walk by the time the evening rolled around. It still hurt about 5 weeks pp but now its almost completely gone. Although I do notice when I sit on the edge of the bathtub to bathe the kids, it hurts really bad. But I can actually put my pants on without having to sit down, so I'm happy lol.
