Random ?s for when the kids are older

I'm just curious what everyone's thoughts are. I haven't really formed an opinion yet on most of this stuff. (ETA: Well I guess to some extent I have an opinion, but it's not rock solid.)

1) When will you give them their own rooms? Or will you keep them in the same room?

2) Will they share a car?

3) What age will you let them have a cell phone?

4) Are you planning to pay for college, or a portion of it?

Re: Random ?s for when the kids are older

  • To be fair, I will answer my own questions.

    1) When will you give them their own rooms? Or will you keep them in the same room?  I'm guessing we will keep them in the same room, unless we buy a larger house or they request to be split up. If they want to be split, we can manage it in our current house, but we would have some rearranging to do.

    2) Will they share a car? Planning to make them share a car until they are able to put a decent down payment on one of their own.

    3) What age will you let them have a cell phone? Not really sure about this one yet. I had to get a job before I could get a cell phone, but I see an awful lot of young kids with phones lately.

    4) Are you planning to pay for college, or a portion of it? Hoping to pay for a portion of it. We plan to start investing for college as soon as we get some other debts paid off.

  • 1) When will you give them their own rooms? Or will you keep them in the same room?

Mine are already in their own rooms, we separated them around 15 months when we moved.

    2) Will they share a car?

Probably. We will alternate days as to who gets to drive.

    3) What age will you let them have a cell phone?

This one depends, probably around pre-teenish mainly because if they are out with friends, I want to be able to get in touch and for them to be able to call if needed. It will be limited, no text messaging, etc.

    4) Are you planning to pay for college, or a portion of it? The kids will have funds to pay for school, I will encourage a part time job for spending expenses.

  • 1) When will you give them their own rooms? Or will you keep them in the same room?

I'd like for our next house to allow for the possibility of them having their own rooms (this house doesn't). But even if we get there, I won't split them up unless/until they ask for it.

    2) Will they share a car?

In high school, you mean? If they're driving a car that H and I buy, yes, they'll definitely share. Assuming they go to the same high school, there's no reason for them to drive separately.

    3) What age will you let them have a cell phone?

Probably pretty young. I like the idea of having a way to get ahold of them where they are, and at the rate things are going, their friends' houses might not have land lines.

    4) Are you planning to pay for college, or a portion of it?

We're saving. Whether we pay for a portion or all will likely depend on where they choose to go.

  • 1) When will you give them their own rooms? Or will you keep them in the same room? The plan is to keep them in the same room until they ask to be separated.

    2) Will they share a car? They can borrow our cars until they can afford to buy their own.

    3) What age will you let them have a cell phone? I have no idea. Haven't even though about that.

    4) Are you planning to pay for college, or a portion of it?  We've set up their college savings fund already. Hoping to pay for all of it, if not a very large portion of it. Canadian university is much cheaper than American though.

  • 1) When will you give them their own rooms? Or will you keep them in the same room?  Same room, until we move to a larger house which will probably not be for a while given the lovely housing market.

    2) Will they share a car? Yes, probably w/ their older brother

    3) What age will you let them have a cell phone? Probably at a younger age but only the one that dials "mom", "dad" and "grandparents". Definitely no texting, we have a 8 year old cousin who texts us random sh!t all the time and it drives me crazy!!!

    4) Are you planning to pay for college, or a portion of it? Yes, DH has already started 529 savings plan for DS#1 and we plan to do the same for DS#2 and DS#3.

I'm just curious what everyone's thoughts are. I haven't really formed an opinion yet on most of this stuff. (ETA: Well I guess to some extent I have an opinion, but it's not rock solid.)

    1) When will you give them their own rooms? Or will you keep them in the same room?

    - they were separated at 7 months b/c of sleep problems

    2) Will they share a car?

-yes, we both shared an extra car owned by our parents w/ our siblings in high school & will likely do the same for them

    3) What age will you let them have a cell phone?

-this is a tough one, I think we'll probably have one that we only give them when they're younger (like under 12) for things like going to an overnight event or some sort of day trip, etc, that has a limited plan but seeing how things have developed in recent years, by the time our kids are around 12, I suspect things will be a lot different & we'll have to figure that out at that time to see what is practical & realistic. I don't want to give in to my kids' every whim but I also don't want them to be totally left out socially b/c I won't let them have access to whatever it is.

    4) Are you planning to pay for college, or a portion of it?

    - We'll pay for it. We will encourage state schools (we went to state schools) unless there is a really special reason they would want to go private- like an exceptional school or a major/program that is very specific/special.

  • 1) When will you give them their own rooms? Or will you keep them in the same room?

We will have them share rooms until they tell us they want to be in seperate rooms. I shared a room with my sister (two years older) for quite awhile and really enjoyed it.

    2) Will they share a car?

My DH and I agreed that we will give them the option of sharing a new, nice truck or two older used trucks.

    3) What age will you let them have a cell phone?

When they start doing extracurricular activities after school and need it to call for a ride or something. The phones will be kept in our room at night and they can only have it a certain amount of time.

    4) Are you planning to pay for college, or a portion of it?
Luckily, my FIL is setting aside money to put in an account so that we will hopefully have enough to either cover or come close to tuition. We will help out as much as we can.

  • 1) When will you give them their own rooms? Or will you keep them in the same room?

Since mine are b/g, I'm hoping they can share until they are 4 or 5.  Our house is 3 bedrooms and I'm not sure what we'll do with all the office stuff and books currently in the 3rd bedroom.

    2) Will they share a car?

DH and I have talked about this.  If we don't have a car we "save" for them (this is what my parents did), I figured we'd say we have X amount of dollars.  We can either get once nicer car or two less expensive cars.  It will likely be a small amount of money because I just don't think kids need new (or newer) cars.

    3) What age will you let them have a cell phone?

I'm not sure about this.  I'm thinking 8th or 9th grade, but nearly all of the students in my Mom's 3rd grade class have cell phones.

    4) Are you planning to pay for college, or a portion of it?

I think DH and I are going to be split about this.  I used Georgia's HOPE scholarship to pay for college.  I'd love for the kids to use it if it's still around.  My parents helped me out with rent money.  I paid for everything else.  DH's parents paid for everything. I think it's good for kids to pay for some so they take some ownership in it and are motivated.  DH's parents have gifted the babies what is remaining in DH's college fund, but it's probably not even enough to cover a year (and that's at today's prices).

    1) When will you give them their own rooms? Or will you keep them in the same room?

    We're hoping until around kindergarten.

    2) Will they share a car?

If they get a car in HS, I'm thinking probably so. The biggest issue is that we plan on sending them to Catholic schools and they would go to different high schools.

    3) What age will you let them have a cell phone?

Whenever they start doing extra curricular activities and may need to reach us.

    4) Are you planning to pay for college, or a portion of it? We'd like to, as much as possible.  Both DH and I attended college on Louisiana's TOPS program and our parents covered room and board, and we both worked for fun money.  We both graduated completely debt free and it's been a wonderful start to not be burdened with massive student loans.  We would hope that there would be a program like this around, and, if not, we will definitely encourage state schools, unless there is some really compelling reason to go to a private school for a particular major.

  • 1. we already have them in their own rooms and it will stay that way.

    2. hmm, not sure about the car.  most likely we will help each of them buy their own car assuming that they are both responsible enough and work.

    3. they can have a cell phone as soon as they are in school, but it may be one that can only call out to certain numbers.  its good for an emergency.

    4.  we will (hopefully) pay for their education, as long as they are responsible, hard working and motivated (and want to go).
