Infant poop question - especially reflux/ GI issue moms

DD's dirtied her diaper this morning and it was scary!  Completely black, and very runny, so much so that it soaked through the top layer of the diaper.  She just dirtied another and it was exactly the same way.

Prior to this morning her diapers were a bit watery (but not this runny) and had a yellowish tint.  I was told that the runniness was due to the Alimentum formula (powder).

She's been on Neocate for 5 days as of today.  Could that be the culprit?  Although, it seems odd to pop up suddently, 5 days later. . .

Any other thoughts?

Thanks ladies!

Re: Infant poop question - especially reflux/ GI issue moms

  • black would concern me.  Garrison was on Alimentum but I don't really recall her poop being any different than when she was exclusively bf'd.....actually I think she went a little bit less and it may have been less runny....but different kids are going to react differently to it.

If it continues to be black, I would call the pedi.

  • Ahhh...the Neocate poops:) That is what they will continue to look like. Black and stinky. They might firm up a bit, but the black will most likely stay.

Also, I have a can of Neocate leftover and I've been trying to find someone who can use it. If you are want it FB me your address.

  • Yes, I remembers those days, but not fondly.  Totally normal on Neocate.  Another thing they dont tell you about Neocate (might happen, might not), but once ds when on it and his digestive system started working correctly (about 5 weeks into using Neocate) he had to 'relearn' how to poop b/c his digestive system had been so out of what that he didnt poop for like 5 days.  But once he relearned all was well.

Another piece of advice that worked really well for us was probiotics.  The Culturelle for Kids was a miracle for DS.

    GL!

  • Ahhhh, you girls are the BEST!  It's way too bizare to not cause some wonder/concern.  It'd be so helpful if doctors actually told you these things, you know?!

And thanks so much for the offer, Preheated - I'll try to remember to do that in the morning!
