can I start running yet?

I ran through most of my pregnancy and have read articles implying that it's safe to run before 6 weeks PPD if you feel good enough to do so and listen to your body.. I had a very fast, very easy labor and have been walking 2-4 miles daily since 4 days PPD. I haven't noticed an increase in bleeding because of it and am just incredibly anxious to run. Think I can manage a couple miles at a slower pace or should I wait it out?

  • Only you know truly how you feel. Just be sure to take it easy and really listen to your body, don't over do it. I am 5.5 months PP and still in pain. Be careful.

  • I worked out my entire pregnancy, and was back at the gym when my son was 11 days old. I found that lifting weights and doing cardio on the elliptical and stairmaster was fine, but when I tried running it was uncomfortable, I felt like my girly bits were going to drop out and I peed on myself (TMI I know but you asked). I think running became comfortable again around 7-8 weeks PP. I bled until 6-7 weeks, probably because I rushed it. So IMHO, wait to run. But try it, you know your body best, but stop if it feels bad. There are plenty of other exercises to do that arent running.

  • I think everyone is different and you'll know right away if you're ready. I started running (slowly) at 3 weeks PP and was fine.  I ran a 5k at almost my pre-pg speed (not fast!) when ds was 8 weeks.
  • I felt like I could start running a week after I gave birth, but walked until my PP apppointment at 5 weeks.  When I went in, the doc said to wait 3 more weeks....although I felt good enough to run he wasn't satified that I was ready from a physical standpoint.  At 8 weeks PP, I started running again and was able to pretty much get back to where I had been in a few weeks.  I finished a half marathon when J was 5 months.

After my experience, I would be a little cautious.

  • My MW said to wait to run until I had stopped bleeding. I started running again (slowly) at about 5 weeks pp.  I'm still not quite up to my pre-preggo speed but I'm getting there.  I'm training for a half-marathon in August.

  • I started running again a week after giving birth. I also had a very easy and fast vaginal delivery and started walking 3-4 miles daily two days after giving birth. I ran a full marathon 2 months after giving birth, so I wanted to start very soon again. It worked out fine for me.
