Cut Dairy=DD no weight gain?

DD has a milk protein sensitivity, and I've had to cut all dairy (even hidden dairy). I've been doing this for 3 weeks now.  DD was born SGA at 4lb15oz and from the day we left the hospital has gained steadily about 1.2oz a day.  Because of the milk sensitivity, jaundice, birthweight, etc., we've had to go to the doc every week so I've got a good handle on her growth.  At 8 weeks she weighed 9lb12oz. Then suddenly at 9 weeks she weighed 9lb13oz. She gained 1oz all week.  Doc is watching it for 1 more week before looking into causes and won't speculate in the meantime.

Could this be from the dairy cut? Anyone else have to cut dairy and see a change in growth?

I'm already a meat and veggie gal...how else to boost her calories?

Re: Cut Dairy=DD no weight gain?

  • I wouldn't think that cutting dairy would have any effect on your DD's weight gain.  I've had to cut out all of the top 8 allergens, and my DD's weight gain never slowed.

Have her symptoms cleared up?  If there's something else in your diet that's bothering her it could affect weight gain.

  • How did you both determine that your baby had a milk protein sensitivity?
  • hi,

Evan lost a lb before leaving the hospital and barely gained for about 2 months.  dairy was the issue.  i cut it out and he started to slowly gain.  he pooped enough and went pee enough so i knew he was getting enough to eat.  he really started to pack it on when we started solids.  i honestly wouldnt worry.  i know how you feel though, I used to get so upset that Evan would not gain that much, but now he is perfectly fine.  I still bf and he has food too!

  • My best friend successfully nursed 2 sons for over 12 months each all dairy free. They are very healthy and LARGE babies. Taking out dairy would not cause DD not to gain.
