owwww mastitis, u should read if you're bfing...

For those of you who are bfing, seriously pump and empty your breasts more frequently than I have been and try to get rest.  I totally think this is why I now have mastitis.  I had a blocked duct a few weeks ago and was able to fix that but I think recently I have been trying to "keep up" with our normal social schedule, working out, etc etc and have been feeding my LO on the go, or cutting him off too early, with a combo of not getting up in the night to pump.  My boobs are def letting me know that I need to pay more attention to them.  My right breast hurts SO bad and I now have a bright yellow/green discharge coming out...lovely, especially on a Sunday night.  arrgghh

Empty those breasts people and get more rest, this HURTS!

  • Sorry you have mastitis but if you pump a lot that will only make more milk. Cause of the supply & demand.

  • Have you called your doctor? I waited an extra 15 + hours too many because it was on a Sunday night. When I went in on Monday, my doctor said I should have called the nurse line- that is the only thing he will call in an antibiotic even if he didn't see you. It can get bad quickly!

  • called the doc, she said I didn't sound like the "classic case" and to wait until 8am to go in.  My temp was rising but I took some Tylenol and it has since gone down and I'm feeling a little better, we'll see...if it gets worse tonight, I will go to ER.

This!! If your baby starts sleeping longer periods through the night, it's better to suffer through a few nights of engorgement than to keep pumping every night. If you do that, your body will never figure out to stop producing milk at that time.

    Hope you feel better!

This. Plus, your breasts are never truly "empty". You have a store of milk to give your LO when you start feeding but then after that your body makes it as your LO is eating. So pumping just makes your body think it still has to make milk.

Anyway, hope you get rid of the M soon. I've heard it really sucks. I had clogs a lot with my DD 1 and I learned how to get rid of them really quickly (within a day) - it takes some unpleasant practice.

  • And make sure you have well fitting nursing bras! If you bought them before your milk came in, they could be the wrong size and that can cause problems and make existing problems worse!
