Yup. I love using coupons, I love saving money and I'm a pretty avid couponer. I rarely pay for toiletries, cleaning supplies, and TP.
HOWEVER...
I have a very large home...way bigger than most of these "couponers" have....but there will NEVER be a "toliet paper room" or stacks and stacks of crap in my basement. I don't care how much the store "paid" the person to take 120 bottles of mustard out of the store....who needs that much mustard?!?!?!
If I have so many tubes of toothpaste that it cannot be contained in our bathroom's storage areas...we have enough toothpaste.
I do love it when they donate the stuff though...that I'm totally down with. Everyone else though...yah...they are going to go from TLC's "Extreme Couponing" show straight to "Buried Alive:Hoarders" show.
I agree to an extent. I don't see an issue building a modest stockpile of items you regularly use and are expensive - if you can get them for free or very inexpensive. But I completely agree about the random condiments, etc.
I'd love to be able to have 12 boxes of cereal or cases of soda stockpiled because I got them free, but alas I don't have the time or energy to put that much into couponing where I'd get something for such a low price I'd even want to stockpile it.

Totally. I have a "stockpile" of about 10 jars of PB and jelly each. We go through A LOT of PB&J here...so yeah...a few weeks ago with a sale and coupons when I got them for about 25 cents each, I loaded up! I also have about 10 boxes of raisin bran crunch in my pantry too that I got REALLY cheap. But again...it stays in the pantry. No cereal boxes stacked up in the garage!! lol
I think part of the problem with stockpilers is they think that the deal will NEVER come around again...which I spend about an hour a week planning my shopping trips and clipping coupons...I have realized that stores generally run the same promotions AT LEAST every 3 months. So the deal will come back...no need to go crazy over mustard!
I've been working on it for the past few weeks, it's pretty easy to get toiletries and razors for free or cheap. I love the idea of stockpiling them and then donating them, I'm excited for that more than the idea of saving money.
It's the crazy, abusing the system crap that makes stores change their coupon policies and ends up screwing over us regular couponers. I really hate any show that highlights the nutjobs among a group and makes us all look crazy. Those people have problems. Just listen to the one woman who brags about how she'll drop any family plans she has if there is a deal to go get. It's sad.
The biggest stockpile I ever got of an item was when I had two dozen boxes of pasta. I was paid 30 cents each to take them home. However, we are obsessed with pasta and eat it about twice a week around here at minimum. I bought that stockpile in March and it's all gone now.

This.
I should also add that I've only watched the show once. There was a lady who dragged her kids around, knocking on people's doors asking for their coupons. It was like begging. I'm not a mom yet but I have to believe that there are better things I'll be doing with my child(ren).

This is EXACTLY what I told my H after the 1st episode. One storage shelf in your garage is one thing--I can understand wanting a *small* stockpile of laundry soap, deoderant, etc...but a tower of freakin toilet paper in your shower is another. It's not being smart, it's being a hoarder.

Am I the only one who hears the line "this will be our biggest haul yet.." almost every show? Meaning these people don't go to the store every week to spend $4 on $2K worth of stuff. They accumulate and probably only get a few good sales a week if even that much. Its for the SHOW they're buying 120 bottles of mustard. I'd be wiling to bet few and far between probably really go that extreme on a regular basis regardless what they say.
I coupon. My husband and I also ONLY eat about about 2-3 things that come from a box (cereal - fiber one/healthier ones, Barilla Plus Pasta & occasionally FiberOne Bars as snacks) and EVERYTHING else is fresh produce or meat.
My best friend is an avid couponer, she also works at a hospital and gives away 80% of what she gets to whomever needs it...she does it because she finds it fun.
I don't pay (or more then .50) for toothpaste, toothbrushes, body wash, deodorant etc.
I'm currently trying to "stock-pile" free or super low cost pet food to donate to our shelter as well as free to low cost canned goods since Thanksgiving etc is coming up. I find it fun, its pure math - its cool to see the money saved too. We tend to spend it elsewhere and it evens out.
The show is entertaining just as any reality show is, but not meant to be taken that seriously.

I watch this show if I happen to catch it while flipping channels, but I don't really follow it. I clip coupons (not to this extent, although I wish I was able to do more), and I try and match them to the sales, but what these people do is insane. It drives me crazy to see them clear out a whole shelf or two of a particular item, because I've gone to the store numerous times for an item, and someone else had already bought them all. If you know you're going to be buying that much, call the manager and order your own supply (like some have done).
As far as them giving other couponers a bad name... the ones who are doing it honestly don't bother me, but they've shown some that are matching the barcode to the coupon... not the item. That's coupon fraud, and it absolutely impacts others that use coupons. If you use the coupon correctly, everyone wins (manufacturer has more sales, the store is reimbursed, and the shopper pays less), unlike when you commit coupon fraud.
And the amount of stuff they accumulate, like PP said, is disgusting. I've only seen one (maybe there has been more than that though..) donate the stockpile. And these "SAHM"s spend 40+ hours a week on this... who is taking care of the kids/family? Isn't the point of SAH to be there with your family, not on the computer all day planning shopping trips?

Psh, come on now--the KIDS are free labor for coupon cutting! So it's a win-win: they get all their coupons, and it doubles as "family time".
That was sarcasm, don't worry.
