I just started this week (4 months). I do a combo of nursing and formula feeding, so i will either nurse or give a small bottle first and then do cereal. 1 table spoon of rice mixed with 3-4 table spoons of bm or formula. I do once a day. 3 days of rice, then 3 days of oats and then 3 days of barley. I look for any reactions (none so far). Then I will start with orange veggies, then green, then fruits. This is the same as i did with my son and as recommended by my pedi. She wasn't crazy about the rice but it's going better with oatmeal.
Tried rice cereal and Ty hates it. Gave him the itty bittiest bite of applesauce and pureed carrots to see if it was the rice cereal itself he didnt like and he made the same yuck why are you giving me this crap face lol. Guess he isn't ready. I will try rice cereal again at 5 months. Other solids not until 6 months minimum and I read to start with vegetables first before fruits so I may puree my own sweet potato and carrots etc.
We had given cereal prior to 4 months but not a ton since DS hated it and the probiotic irritated his tummy but I didn'tknow any other brand that was non-dairy/soy. We decided to just start solids at 4 months to see if that was better and he loved it. We started out with homemade sweet potatoes and then squash. He has also had banana for his breakfast or applesauce as well. We go every 3 days with trying a new food. Once he has tried all the food I have frozen for him I think we will just rotate between those. He get his solids 1x/day.
I tried rice cereal with DD a week or so ago (4 months) a couple times, and she literally just spits it all out. We play the "No honey we keep our food in our mouth" game where I keep wiping and shoveling it back in her mouth. Did this 4 or 5 times and decided to hold off for now. I'm really in no rush.

We've tried four days of rice cereal, and now one day of oatmeal. She HATES it. Every time has ended with her throwing a giant temper tantrum. I don't know if it's the foods themselves or if she's just not ready for solids. Later this week, I'll try a puree to see if it's just the cereals she doesn't like. If she still hates it, we'll hold off and try again at 5 months.
I plan on starting around 6 mo. Have you heard of "Baby Lead Weaning"? That's what we plan on doing. It's a great book and gives a lot of insight into why some babies struggle (aka look like they don't like) with baby food, especially cereal. We'll start with some type of veggie... not sure which one yet. We're also using the assumption the solids are just supposed to be fun and experimental at this age, not typically add a lot of calories - so I will feed him BM first before offering any solids.
We have no plan so far. DD is still spitting up almost every time she eats and we haven't determined if it's something other than reflux, milk, or soy. So we're holding off. She took Prevacid off a spoon the other day and I kind of feel bad holding off until 6 months since she seems so interested in eating.
We started! Started with rice cereal about 3 1/2 months. He was ok with that. After 2 weeks we tried oatmeal and he likes that much better. About week ago we started purees. Veges first. Did try pears the other day, he's not a fan, but I mixed it with his oatmeal and he loved it. He's a great eater. Like PP we play keep the food in our mouth game, but he's actually not too bad. He's defintely ready for food. He opens his mouth when the spoon is coming, it's so cute. But right now we are doing some oatmeal for breakfast and then food around dinnertime. I'm buying jar food and give him 1/3 of it at a sitting.

We started at 4 months. Started with rice cereal. He would spit it out and make faces at first but once we started adding purees to it he eats it up. He had sweet potatoes first, then squash, peas and carrots. He has liked everything we have given him. We feed him solids once or twice a day.

Thanks ladies! I'm kind of surprised so many people have started solids already! We are planning on waiting till 6 months, but possibly experimenting with rice cereal before then. I just like to be prepared so thanks for all the info/tips!
We just had our 4 month appointment a couple days ago and the pedi okayed cereal. We are skipping rice and going straight to oatmeal since rice is just an empty calorie with no nutrional value.
The pedi recommended waiting until about 5.5 - 6 months to start any fruits or veggies due to H's numerous food allergies. We plan to start with sweet potatoes, but I don't have any reason for it.
Right now he's having cereal once per day about 1.5 hours after his 4:30 pm feeding, so around "dinner time". He eats about 3 tablespoons of cereal/milk easily and it prolongs his next feeding by about an hour (so definitely filling him up), so I don't really want to give him more at this point since he's supposed to be getting the majority of nutrition from breastmilk. When we start fruits and veggies I plan on introducing them after his 10:30 am bottle and continuing with cereal in the evening.
