Soy Formula

Despite Children's lack of help, my pediatrician has been awesome and is trying anything she can to help us even though DD has a specialist.  We are zeroing in on a food intolerance/allergy.  She is currently on an elimination diet, so only formula.  DD never has had normal poops, well not until she moved to solids.  And she always had this stomach pain at night that I complained about.  But it was always passed off as her reflux, a side effect of reflux, or colic.  We have tried Alimentum, Neocate...and all gave her projectile vomiting but did help with the stomach.  Obviously we are not going back that route.

Since only on formula, she is not waking up with hours long screaming fits but she is waking up in pain, and getting her down at night is hard because of the stomach pain.  I am leaning toward first off a milk protein intolerance especially since her loose stools are back as soon as we went formula only.

Since Alimentum, Nutramagin, and Neocate are out, I am leaning towards soy.  I have a TON of prejudices against it as an infertile.  There are studies linking infertility to the use of soy in our food.  But I need to get over that if this will help her.  So if you use soy:

1. why do you use it?

2. what brand do you use?

3. If you changed over for reflux, milk allergies, did it help?

Thank you!!!  I might be grasping at straws but I have to help this little girl.

Re: Soy Formula

  • I used Similac Soy for Gavin because he had a milk protein allergy. The pediatrician said that it would take up to 2 weeks to notice a difference, but I noticed a change within 3 days. I wasn't terribly worried about soy. It seems like it's trendy to vilify soy right now. A lot of regions consume high amounts of soy. If there truly was negative health impacts associated with soy, I would think that it would be pretty easy to track. My sister is a nurse practitioner who works for the Chief of surgery at Cedars. She told me that studies have been done on the connection between the recurrence of breast cancer and soy consumption. Women who cut soy out of their diets are actually MORE likely to have a recurrence of breast cancer.

  • Since you think it might be a protein issue, has she been checked for something called 3mcc (at least I believe that is what it is called). My nephew has it and his body cannot break down protein properly from my understanding. He has been on a special diet since a few months old and has had a few issues that seem similar to what you describe. Just thought I would throw it out there. I hope you guys get some answers soon.

    1. why do you use it? In addition to reflux, Madelyn had a milk protein intolerance, but did not react to soy.

    2. what brand do you use? Similac

    3. If you changed over for reflux, milk allergies, did it help? It was a complete game changer.  She went from screaming night and day to being only a moderately fussy baby.  She's still high maintenance, don't get me wrong.  But she wasn't in constant pain once we got that and how to handle her reflux under control.

Okay - so Soy being a problem with infertility is news to me...and I pray it's not true and I didn't screw my poor missy up. :(
