LO goes to bed at 8, we have a routine: I nurse at 7:30, bath time then lotion, a little puzzle and a book. I put him in his crib awake, no rocking or nursing to sleep. He sleeps from 8 to 1 which is great but then he's up every two hours after that at 3, 5 and 7. I nurse him back to sleep in the night. I can't go to bed at 8 in order to get those 5 solid hours so I'm sort of back to the newborn stage, getting only 2 hours of sleep at a time. Can you see anything about my routine that you would do differently? I feed on demand so I don't mind nursing but, jeez, I need some sleep! And it seems he does too bc he'll wake up bw 9 and 10 and be ready to nap not even an hour later and this nap lasts 3 hours or 4 if I didn't wake him up. Any advice or is this all totally normal?
Re: Sleep advice, XP 3-6
The only thing that I've noticed really helps DD is making sure she gets plenty of sleep during the day. It seems backwards but on days when she naps really good, she sleeps for 8 hours straight at night, gets up to nurse, then sleeps another 2-4 hours. On days when she only get short naps, she wakes up every 2-4 hours to eat. I don't know how your daytime routine is but ours looks like this most days:
Awake 11am - 1pm
Asleep 1pm - 5pm
Awake 5pm - 7pm
Asleep 7pm - 8pm
Nighttime routine, then bed by 11pm
DD has colic and cries at night, that's why she gets to bed so late, but I'm a SAHM so it works for us.
Do you have ambient noise? Like a sleep sheep. What about a pacifier?
What I'm basically getting at is that your baby may wake up-but they may not be really hungry. I know sometimes when LO wakes up for me (beyond his one feeding). Most of the time I just have to put the plug back in and turn on some wave noise and he goes right back to sleep.
As PP suggested, if LO gets plenty of sleep throughout the day she always sleeps better at night. If she goes down at 8, then she is up by 4, sometimes 5 and then is up every 2-3hrs after that.
Have you tried letting your LO take a nap at 8, instead of putting to bed? If I let my LO take a nap around 7-7:30 and keep her up until 10pm, she sleeps in until 7!
