Food Allergy

xp - allergy test results :(

hello all, i was wondering if anyone has had any experiences with allergic babies. for some time now, maddie (8.5 months) has been scratching like crazy. after taking some easy steps like ensuring that everything was "clear and free", etc., my pedi suggested we see an allergist after we had an extra-bad hivey incident. so, after a failed skin test bc of an over-reaction or possible transferance, we finally got a successful blood test on the second attempt. i received results yesterday that she's allergic to the following: dog, cat, dust mites, egg whites, milk, wheat, peanut and whole eggs (the last two are categorized as class two). i'm assuming at this point that it's the 1st three that are the current culprits. i still need to go over the results with the allergist when he receives the lab results. at this point, we're going to continue giving her baby zyrtec during the day to try and alleviate the itchiness. i hate to medicate her everyday. i'm HOPING at least some of these allergies will go away with time. has anyone else had a similar situation? any advice would be so appreciated. have a great weekend!

Re: xp - allergy test results :(

  • I'm so sorry to hear about your DD's diagnosis.  At seven months DS#3 tested positive for dogs, milk, egg, peanut, soy and some environmental stuff.  At two years we added tree nuts to the list.  It's overwhelming at first but you will find your way.

All three of my kids get Zyrtec daily (two with food allergies, one with only environmental allergies).  It really does help keep a lid on things.  You do what you have to do.

  • Sorry about the allergies. they suck! but it does get easier after a while.

my son is allergic to milk, soy, eggs, peanuts (outgrew sesame). He was diagnosed after touching a piece of egg and going into an anaphylactic shock and had to be hospitalized. for the first 8 months of his life he had terrible eczema and pretty much had socks on his hands for the first 8 months so he doesn't rip his eyes out.  No one diagnosed him with allergies until he had to be rushed to the ER.  It sucks.. really reallly sucks.

this is a great group and when you're ready for meal ideas -we got plenty!  Your best bet for now is to avoid restaurants and learn how to cook, if you're not a cook. (i was a take out girl pre-allergies and now i cook every single day). and if you are a cook -you need to re-learn a lot.

When we found out about my son's allergies, and after he was still having issues with cross contamination -we pretty much removed EVERYTHING in the kitchen that is or has eggs, milk, soy, peanuts, sesame in them.  It was so hard. We got rid of sooo much stuff (gave away some and threw out about 2 bags).  Pretty much everything.  We spent so much money for the first few weeks at health food stores buying "special" food for the house.

Start off with the basics.. learn to read labels.. this was the hardest

    > Egg replacers (here are great ideas)
    > For a cows milk allergy... either use Soy milk, Rice milk (fortified), Hemp milk.. there are a few others. (i'm not a fan of soy these days)
    > Nuts -it's easier to avoid all. My son is allergic to peanuts and we do use Almond butter (fresh).. but you can also use sunbutter.
    > For Wheat.. there are now so many products that are wheat free.. just go to the Gluten free isle and you can buy gluten free bread, pastas... and so on
    > since she's allergic to milk, make sure you avoid casein. This explains what to avoid with a milk allergy
    >This is gluten and dairy free but it may be helpful

A lot of us have blogs in our siggy's and they might be very helpful.  I just added a "pantry" tab that might help you a little.. except that my house is not wheat free.  but many things that are allergy friendly are also wheat free.

Good luck.. sorry for the long reply -i really don't know how to write less :)

EDIT-- i just wanted to add one more thing.  Hopefully your family will be understanding. many are not b/c not many people take it seriously. I have issues constantly w/ people.  As of now, no one is allowed to kiss or touch my sons face and if there is food (a bbq or what ever) - no one is allowed to touch him unless you wash your hands. I have gotten dirty looks and eye rolls that have made me burst into tears. At the end of the day -i would rather have my son sleep in his own bed than at the hospital.  This definitely teaches you what's important.

  • like everyone else said- it does suck but it does get easier once you get your footing with safe foods.  We give our son Claritin almost daily.  He didn't do well with the zyrtec.  Some kids react better to different allergy meds.  If the zyrtec doesn't seem to be helping- ask your pedi about switching.

At 8 months her food will be easier to control than the environmental ones.  when you start child proofing as she gets more moble you'll have to think about crumbs on the floor and what's on the pantry shelves that she can reach.  Not just at your house- but anywhere you are visiting.  That was (and is- even at 2) a hard one for us.  Our family knows not to offer our son any food without our OK but dropped food/crumbs have caused breakouts for him before.

  • welcome!  My son was diagnosed at 4 months old.  We were referred to an allergist for the same reason as you.  He had eczema so badly that he looked like we locked him in his room with a wolverine at night.  He had 2 seperate infections from the open scratches.  It took a few months for the eczema to clear after we stopped giving him dairy.

It may seem overwhelming, but it does get easier!
