3rd Trimester

Worried about being induced (long vent)

I had my 38 week appointment yesterday. The day before I had an ultrasound to check for LGA (large gestational age). Our DS is measuring about 8lbs, give or take a pound due to lack of accuracy. I am not a very big person (4'11 and 140lbs before pregnancy). My doctor says that she thinks I will be able to give birth vaginally as long as he doesn't get much bigger. BUT she also wants to wait to induce me until I have passed the 39 weeks mark to ensure that he is fully developed. So the plan is to induce on June 30th if I don't go into labor naturally (only 1 cm dialated at last appointment). I am not scared of the pain that comes with being induced, but that if I don't progress we will have to do a c-section. I really just don't want the pain of a c-section on top of an induction. So prayers that I go into labor naturally or that the induction works would be greatly appreciated.

8 or 9 pounds isn't THAT big. It's big, but not giant, you could totally deliver a baby that size, women do it every day.

I was induced at over 40 weeks and ended up with a C-section but not all women do! A dear friend of mine was induced and went through labor epi free and did fabulously. Don't freak out yet ;)

  • Yeah, I dunno, ultrasounds can be off by as much as two pounds, and it's pretty common for women to get peanuts when they were expecting giants, and vice-versa.  And it's also entirely possible for tiny women to deliver big ole babies.  I'm about your height and normally 110-115 lbs, and I delivered my, DD who was pushing 9 lbs, without any problems or complications.  I just don't think a very-possibly inaccurate growth u/s is a good enough reason to induce right at 40 weeks, you know?  It would be different if you had funky pelvic bones or something.  Simply being small is kind of a non-issue.

But anyway, my unsolicited opinion wasn't what you asked for, lol.  I really hope you get to go into labor naturally, and if not then here's hoping your 1 cm is progress enough to make the induction a success.  GL!

    yup.

And while they say "give or take a pound or two" The number of women who were told they were going to have 8, 9, or 10lb babies that ACTUALLY have 5, 6, or 7 lbs babies IS VERY HIGH.

Trust your body more as long as you are healthy and take care of yourself...it probably won't create anything you can't handle. Confused

Most certainly agreed. If your body's smart enough to know how to grow a human being, I'm pretty sure it's smart enough to pop out said human being before it becomes a problem. It's likely that your body knows more than an ultrasound, and will go into labor all on it's own. Inductions can be risky too, since you're forcing your body to do something it might not be fully prepared for. So if you can put it off without it becoming an actual medical problem, I would recommend you do so. Either way, here's wishing you and LO the best!! Good luck!

  • I agree with the others. I would not want an induction at 40 weeks just because the baby might be too large.

  • I was induced the day after my due date. They did an u/s for size at 39 weeks and said 7 lbs 7 oz... After laboring all day (epidural provided much relief) and getting to 1.5 cm (wahoo!) they finally realized she was stuck. So I had a csection. She ended up being 9lbs 4 oz. And I gotta say that was pretty darn big. Soooo here is the honest truth.. you can only control so much and you are gonna have to do what is best for your baby sooooo the best thing to do is roll with it. Yes csection sucks but it isn't the worst thing. I know this is such a crazy time for you but just sit back relax and enjoy the little movements in your belly right now. They will be gone before you know it! GL! :)

I'm in the same boat as you! only 1 cm dilated for 2 weeks now & due yesterday. I have an NST and AFI scheduled for Monday and they will talk induction that week if the results are not good. If they are ok results then I'm supposed to wait for next sunday/Monday to be induced. My OB said I would probably go on my own before then though. she said since I haven't dilated much that she didn't feel right about an induction unless the tests are not good, because I would have a greater chance of a c/s, which I do not want. I'm hoping I dilated some more this weekend as i've been having much more discharge which is new to me right now.

  • I understand your worries...GL, I'm sure you'll do wonderfully! :)

Popping over from 9-12. I had a very successful induction and vaginal delivery at 39 weeks after two weeks of bedrest (my blood pressure spiked toward the end). It is possible. I was worried about the exact same thing and posted on here several times. Just wanted to chime in with at least one success story. It sounds like your doctor thought through the plan and is trying to do what will help you have the best chances of a vaginal delivery.
