Have you been to Hamilton Pool?

How kid-friendly is it? It looks gorgeous from the pictures, and I know Mike and I would enjoy it, but I hate to drive all the way out there to find out that there's no shallow area or that the water is freezing like Barton Springs or that there's no sandy area for the kids to play when they're not the in the water, etc.

If you've been, how was it?

Re: Have you been to Hamilton Pool?

  • we went all the time before ruby and still go about twice a year with her. she's been at 6 months, 1.5 and now 2.5. it's cold, but we love it and so does she. there is a rocky beach to play on, but it gets pretty crowded as more people show up and you have less room to play. they limit the number of cars they let in, but there's still a good crowd by lunch time. we love to sit in the shallow water and splash around, plus explore on the paths all around. be sure the kids wear shoes they can wear in and out of the water, makes things much easier. it's more kid friendly than barton springs, imo. plus, you can bring food. it's one of my favorite spots in austin.

  • It's definitely not as cold as Barton Springs!

  • I love Hamilton Pool - it's really, really beautiful there.  I don't think I've been with V though, maybe once when she wasn't mobile.  Whenever we go, we usually expect to spend all our time in the water because the little "beach" is so small and crowded (when we've been we're probably just two feet or so from the people next to us.  I was thinking it wasn't all that kid friendly but since pp has been there with her kiddo, her recollection is better!  The only other consideration is that it's a little bit of a hike, so travel light.  I've seen people get out of their cars with a huge cooler full of ice and drinks only to realize that it's going to be really difficult if impossible to get it down there. I would go on a weekday if you can - and don't forget to call ahead - it closes sometimes!
