Alright, so do I need newborn-sized stuff? Or skip it and just get 0-3mo? Do I wait til 38 weeks to buy the early basics to see how big they think the baby will be? What size do I get for the "take home" outfit?
I sort base it on the size of the babies in your family. My family has large babies, typically and so does my husband's family. I didn't buy anything newborn sized with any of my kids and good thing, as my son was 9lb 1oz, daughter 1 9lb 10oz and T-rex was 8lb 12oz at one week early... Out of the 3, only T-rex wore 0-3 month size clothes for more than a week.

I have everything from newborn to 12 months onesies and rompers. People buy these things for me - my grandmother started collecting the day she found out I was pregnant.
DD was 7lbs 12 oz at birth and wore NB for almost 11 weeks. I had to run around, trying to find more NB summer clothes for her. Even though she was big enough for the 0-3 stuff, it didn't fit her for a long time. So in my experience, yes, you need NB. Every baby is different, so you just never know!
I'd have at least a few on hand, but it really depends on the baby. DD wore newborn for a month to 6 weeks; while other babies may never even wear NB.
One thing to mention, clothing sizes vary brand to brand...Gerber clothes run EXTREMELY small, while Carters are fairly true-to-size.
What she said about the sizing of different brands.
Also, I wouldn't buy a single scrap of NB sized clothing until after your shower (if you're having one). People LOVE to buy the cutesie tiny sized things. You will likely have what you need on hand after all the gifts are opened.
I went mostly 0-3 month for early on. My son wore NB size for about 5 minutes and he wasn't big.
I agree with waiting to buy smaller stuff until after showers, if you don't get enough. For DS I brought both a NB and a 0-3 mth outfit to the hospital for bringing him home in not knowing which would fit. He was 8 lbs and he was in the NB going home outfit.
I only took a 0 to 3 month outfit to the hospital and ended up having a 6lb 15oz baby who SWAM in that outfit. His baby socks came clear up his thighs. I'd have at least a newborn and 0 to 3 month outfit to bring baby home in and take pictures or what not, if not a few newborn sized outfits, but not a lot. They do grow fast.
My DD was born at 37 weeks (so she was full term) but wore preemie clothes for about a month. At 3 months she was just starting to move from newborn to 0-3 month size.
Other babies come out too big to fit in newborn.
I would recommend at least one article of clothing in each size: preemie, newborn & 0-3 months all packed in your bag. We ended up not having a single piece of clothing that fit DD at first.
My DD was born 8lbs 6oz and wore NB clothes until 3 months. I got a lot of NB and some 0-3 at my shower. She was swimming in 0-3 until she was 3 months.
I did bring both a NB outfit and a 0-3m outfit to the hospital. I wanted to be prepared in case she was a huge baby.

Some friends have bought us stuff already and some got us NB stuff and some got us 0-3 stuff. The NB stuff only goes to 8 or 9 lbs, and that makes me nervous. However, if you have a little LO, the NB stuff will be good. It IS a hard call. I say have a few of each on hand and you'll know when LO comes! Ha ha.

DD was 7lbs 7oz and was in newborn for about a week and we had NOTHING in nb sizes since I was 8lb 11 oz and DH was 12lb 10oz so we assumed we were having a BIG baby! But it doesn't necessarily follow that!! (MIL had GD when she was PG with DH but I didn't so that kept her smaller)
I will be taking both sizes this time (for the take home outfit) plus gowns for during the stay.
I think almost all babies fit better in newborn clothes for at least a while when they're born. DD was 8 lbs 1oz and wore newborn clothes for 6-8 weeks. I had a 0-3 mo. dress for her to wear to my dad's wedding when she was 6 wks old and she swam in it.
