nap schedule?

Right now LO sleeps whenever he sleeps... The longer I hold him, the longer he can sleep.  By a fluke, he slept yesterday in his crib for 2 hours.  Otherwise, there's no real nap schedule. When should we start putting an effort into giving him a real "naptime?"

Re: nap schedule?

  • I WILL BE INTRESTED TO HEAR WHAT OTHERS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THIS.  RIGHT NOW OUR LO SLEEPS ALL THE TIME.  NOT SURE WHAT WE WILL DO ABOUT A SCHEDULE.

  • I don't know for sure, but I don't think you can really put a newborn on any kind of reliable schedule. I would say not for at least a couple months...?

  • I figured out when my son was close to 2 months old he had his own "schedule" of staying awake for about 2hrs at a time, so I would make sure to lay him down for a nap 2hrs after he woke up. I did that all during the day, he started sttn at 9wks old. Definitely nor the norm I don't think anyway!

  • I'm not sure either about the newborns adapting to a schedule. I'd be interested in what others have to say.

  • We're trying out the babywise method because my sister-in-law and several friends have sworn by it.  They say that there shouldn't be a schedule for the first week, just let the baby sleep for however long they would like to sleep.  Then, starting the second week, make sure that the baby has awake time during and after feeding and then let the baby sleep for 1 1/2-2 hours on a 3 hour schedule (so wake at 11 for feeding, wake time from 11-12, sleeping from 12-2, wake up at 2 for feeding).  All of my friends and sister-in-law had their babies sttn by 9 weeks at the latest).

  • I recomend the book healthy sleep happy baby. I had my daughter on a sleep schedule about 6 weeks, and she was and still is an awesome sleeper. This book really helps explain how much sleep baby's and kids need and how it affects their moods.

Interesting..I'm assuming this is only during the day... I can't imagine trying to keep baby awake an hour after a night feeding.  lol I'd be willing to try this.  However, my LO doesn't usually sleep independently in a bassinet/swing/crib/bouncer for extended periods of time during the day.  I'm lucky if I can get him to sleep 45 minutes at a clip without being held.

At night you are supposed to give them their bottle and then put them right back down until they wake up for their next feeding.  We have been very fortunate to have a baby that is a good sleeper :)
