Birth weight- based off of father or mother?

My mother has been teasing me because she is convinced I'm going to have a huge baby (DH and I are very tall and I was 9 lbs. at birth). But we were at a baby store the other day and the gal said that birth weight actually follows the father. DH was only 6lbs when he was born, so I'm hoping LO is closer to him than me.

What has your experience been? Were your babies closer to you or DH's BW?

  • I don't have any experience with this, but my sister was telling me the same thing not too long ago.

  • I think it has a little to do with both, but I think more to do with the mother.  I know it happens, but I would think a 6' man with a tiny 5' woman would have a smaller baby than vice versa.  But I've been wondering this, too, and not getting very far.  I was huge at birth (9 lbs 11 oz) but I was 6 weeks overdue (crazy even for back in 1983!).  My hubby was premature and weighed more like 3 lbs.  I'm just hoping for a good 7-8 lber.

  • I've always been told by my doctors that it has to do with both. I've also noticed that it all depends on if this is your first or second or fifth lol

My son was born 6lbs 14oz - The hubby was 6lbs at birth (due to a mother who smoked throughout her pregnant) and I was 7lbs 7oz I believe.. somewhere around there. And I was my mom's 5th child.

  • My sister and I were both over 9 lbs but apparently they didn't treat GD back then and my mother didn't even remember that she had it until I told her I did even though I had specifically asked her before. My GD was controlled by insulin and DD was 6 lbs 3 oz.

  • I always get a different answer wherever I go and ask......I was only 5lbs 4ozs and I think DH was in the 7lbs range, so I am hoping for a peanut as well.....

  • I have heard it goes by the mother..and her mother..and so on. My OB and the U/S tech at my anatomy scan both told me that. I had never heard this. My mom was 1 oz smaller than me. Apparently you are supposed to be withing a few ounces of your mother..and I was..I weight 6 lb 4 oz..mom was 6lb 3 oz...Im hoping for a smaller baby! My DH was only 7 lb..so either way I hope I dont go bigger than that! Oh and my little brother was withing 2 ounces of my moms weight..so they were right with her.

  • I asked my doctor about this because I was 6lbs 4 oz and DH was 9lbs something.  She said that babies usually take after their mothers in terms of weight.

  • Hopefully she'll take after her mother! I was 6 lbs 13 oz while my hubby was nearly 10! Yikes. My mom said I was too small, so hopefully she'll be in the 7 or 8 pound range.

My Mom thinks the baby takes after the size of the mother while the Mom is at birth. I don't know what that means for me, but she thinks it'll be smaller. I'm not petite, but could be considered "small boned" whatever that means.

  • DH and I were both 7lbs even.  That sounds like a good weight to me!

  • I was 6.3 at birth and my son was 6.3 at birth. His father was a big baby 9.8 however that doesnt mean anything. I think its combination along with some other things like adult size of mom , room, enviroment etc. I say flip a coin and take a guess. Maybe this one will be bigger more like his daddy lol.

  • honestly neither.  My son was 7lbs 1 oz.  I was 8lbs 14 oz and DH was 8lbs. 10 oz.

  • I'm not sure my grandmother could remember how much my mom weighed if she tried (she has a lot of children), so I guess we'll just wait and see. If the "room to grow theory is correct then I'm screwed, lol. I'm 6' tall and there is plleennnty of room in there. We'll know in 17 weeks!

  • Well my DD weighed exactly the same as me and my DS weighed exactly the same as his Dad. (ex-h) It will be interesting to see if this LO weighs the same as her Dad.

  • i was just shy of 8 lbs and DH was just shy of 10lbs.  DD was 11lbs.  so i would believe it.

  • I was a little over 7lbs at birth.  DH (and all three of his brothers) were over 10lbs.  DD was born at 8lb. 12 oz.

  • DS was much closer to DH's birth weight than mine.  I was only 5 lbs, and DS was born at 8 lbs.  DH was a little over 8 lbs I believe.

  • I was eight pounds. My sons dad was 10 pounds. My son was right in the middle at 8 pounds 11oz. I am not sure if that means anything at all but I had never thought of it until now.

  • I don't think there's a for sure formula, but I had heard to take the average of yours and dh's birth weight.  This would've been about right on, although my daughter came a few weeks early (thank goodness...I was looking at a 9 lb baby!)

  • nothing to do with your babys weight. and i was 7lbs, 12oz my husband was 6lbs and our son was born 7lbs,8 oz . so ya i dont think it has anything to do with our birthweights.
  • I think it is more so related to a healthy pregnancy.

  • I wish I could help you here but due to the fact that my DH was a twin micro premie at only 3lbs at birth I will never know. But my two were both around 6lbs at 36 weeks. My mom as overdue when she had me at around 7.5 lbs.

  • I'm interested in how big our baby will  be since DH and all his siblings were over 10lb's and my siblings and I were all over 8lb's... I'm guessing we'll have a big baby... I'm only 5'0. Dr. already made a comment on how we're going to get the baby out cause DH is a thick 6'0.

    We'll see in October!!!
