waterproof mattress pads- needed?

I just ordered my crib mattresses, which supposedly have "hospital grade" vinyl covers. Do I still need to use a waterproof mattress pad (or any type of mattress pad) under the sheet? What about on a pack n play- mattress pad needed?
TTC for 3 years. Finally successful after 5 IUIs and 2 cycles of IVF. Our amazing twins were born 5 weeks early on 8/16/11. Found out April 2012 that our di/di twins are ID.

Re: waterproof mattress pads- needed?

  • I would say that most mattress pads are waterproof.  That doesn't mean they are a like plastic or anything, most of the time you wouldn't even know it.  If I was buying a mattress pad I would make sure it was waterproof, no reason to not buy one in my opinion.

  • We've been using them. The last couple of months we've also been placing these waterproof thin changing pads under a receiving blanket on top of the sheets.

That's probably confusing. It goes mattress, mattress pad, mattress sheet, thin changing pad, thin receiving blanket opened up and flat, and then the baby lies on top of that. That way, if a diaper leaks, the changing pad usually catches it and we don't have to wash the sheets every time there's a leak. We only have to wash the receiving blanket and the pad. I hope that makes more sense.

  • My toddler has been throwing up at night the last 3 nights. It's easier to change a mattress pad than to try to wipe up a mattress that may have leaked over the side. It would be even easier with one of the mattress covers that just snaps over the top side - I can't remember what they're called. Oh, and it would be a LOT easier without bumpers - another strike against those! I just bought a supposedly absorbent, waterproof mattress pad from Target - we'll see how that works tonight if the barfing continues!

Ultimate Crib Sheet.  I have one, then I also bought 2 "mattress pads" that are not fitted and a quilted one too.  I have no idea which is going to work best but I've heard to UCS's are the best and easiest.  But they're $20...
