WWYD: Switching Formulas

I know they say before switching formulas you should talk to your pediatrician. Is that just switching brands or would that also be switching within a brand?

I want to switch LO from Similac to Similac Sensitive, but I don't know if I should talk to my  pedi first?

Re: WWYD: Switching Formulas

  • We switched from Similac Advance to Similac Sensitive without consulting our pediatrician first. The Similac Advance was not agreeing with our LO and he was miserable as a result. We were getting desperate, and since we had a sample of the Sensitive, we gave it a try. We noticed a major improvement within a couple of feedings.. and were thankful that we didn't wait to speak with the PED.

When we went to our pediatrician appointment... we informed her that we had made the change in formula and asked if she felt if there were any cause for concern b/c although LO was peeing regularly, his BM's were irregular.  Our PED said that there was no cause for concern as long as the formula was agreeing with our LO and he not showing signs of distress, we were good to go.

If the Sensitive hadn't worked for us, I would have waited to speak with our Ped prior to switching to another formula. Fortunately.. the Sensitive did work.

  • Why is switching formulas an issue? It never occurred to me to ask our pedi. LO has had Infamil (from the LC), Similac Advanced and Similac Sensitive already.  I just used the samples we received.

  • We also switched from Advanced to Sensitive.  I did talk to my pedi before we switched but there really wasn't any reason to.  We switched because of LOs gassiness.  Now we are looking to change again because of spit-up.
