Baby Names

Need help- WDYT? Dominic and/or Damon

So I have posted on here a couple of days ago a list of boys names we were considering but DH vetoed my favorite ( James)and I vetoed his favorite (Jude) so now we are down to a couple meh names ( Graham, Harrison) I dont love these so I started going over other names I liked but didnt put on our original list. Anyway, I really like the name Dominic and then someone mentioned Damon and thought that was cute too. So here are my questions:

1. WDYT of Dominic?

2. Dominic or Dominick?

3. MN advice for Dominic ( problem with D names is a J mn would give the nn DJ and an M mn would give the initials D.M.V)

4. WDYT of Damon? Does it sound to similar to Damien? Honest?

Thanks ladies we are having a tough time LOL

  • IMO Dominic is a cute Italian name...but it reminds me too much of the Christmas song Dominic the Donkey!

I really really like the name Damon.  One of DH's friends from college  has that name and I think its good for a baby/child and an adult. Not sure on MN though.

Haha didnt think of that song. We are Italian with a very italian last name but we have one son with a trendy name, and one with a classic name, so our sibset is mismatched anyway...oh well

  • Personally I like Dominic. No K.  Damon just doesn't do anything for me.   We are going through baby names now too and one thing I always think of, as silly as it is, is I want something for my little one that isn't an odd ball name.  My parents spelled my name Aimee instead of Amy and I remember being a little kid and going somewhere that has all those little nick nacks with the names already on it and they never had anything with my name spelled the right way.  Kids love that stuff.  Like I said, its silly.  As far as a middle name goes, Dominic was my grandfather and uncles name.  Their middle name is Charles.  Hope this helps and good luck!
  • Damon automatically makes me think Demon.

  • Lol, thats what I thought off too but didn't want to say it.

  • I like Damon more than Dominic. I feel like Dominic would go by a nn and I don't like any of the nns associated with Dominic. I didn't think "demon" when I heard Damon, but I can see why someone would.

    Hope that helps!

  • Love the name! My nephew is Dominic Craig. My mother tried to give him the nickname "Nicky" but we all hateD it and that fizzled out after a few weeks. Everyone calls him Dominic. We sometimes shorten it to D or Big D... He's small for his age (both parents 5'3" and under lol)
  • I think you are overthinking the initials. People rarely get called by their middle name initial unless that's something you really promote. I've known a handful of Dominic's in my life, and they went by their full names. I have no idea what their mn's are!

That said, I love the name Dominic. Spelled that way. :) Not a huge fan of Damon.

  • I really like Dominic (no k).

But, with Damon I think of Damon from the Vampire Diaries, which isn't a bad association....

  • I love Dominic, but I also like Damon.  If you go with Dominic, do not use the k.  Dominic flows well with A names I think...Dominic Austin, Dominic Anthony...

  • Love Dominick, obviously :) We get compliments on our sons name all the time. And I've yet to actually meet another baby Dominick, and I work at an obgyn office so I meet a lot of babies...

We went with the K because we are not italian and thought the c looked more italian. But if you are italian, it could work either way.

His middle name is Joshua, so I do have 2 relatives that have called him DJ...which I don't mind. We have a short last name so I didnt mind the longer first/middle names. He doesn't have any other nicknames...I might use "Dom" when I am texting someone quickly, but no one calls him that.

I know thats why i like it. Then I realized I liked the name Jack because of Jack from LOST and now Damon from VD. So I told my friend "Why am I naming my kids after hot guys on tv?" LOL I dont know why but I LOVE Ian Somerhalder!

  • My brothers name is Damon. He hates it for what thats worth.
  • I like Dominic. Hate Damon.

I think Dominic James would be nice, no reason to call him DJ if you don't want to.

  • Can't stand Damon. Bad associations! Too close to demon.Love Dominic!

  • Damon reminds me of the Wayans Brothers. Love Dominic, it's our "boy" name.

Don't stress over the initials. As long as they don't spell A SS or HIV you're cool.

  • Dominic over Damon. The initials are actually sort of cute. I like Dominic on its own, but it can have great nick names.

Why, thank you!  That's my youngest son's name. :)

As the mom of a Dominic, I can tell you the only thing you might have to consider is that, at least in our experience, a whole lot of people tend to mispronounce it as "Dominique" at first.  (Of course, that could be a regional thing, too.)

My son has my ex's last name, which is also a uniquely Italian name, and we get complimented all the time on how strong his name is all together.

Damon is NMS.  I think it was pretty much overdone not too long ago, so it's just "meh" for me.

  • I really like the name Damon!!!
