Multiples

S/O "How can you tell you are having twins?".....

After I got my BFP (New Year's Day) I had a "sense" that I was having twins due to a couple of things that happened...

1) I had 2 dreams that DH and I were in the hospital and he was trying to weigh this little baby and I was holding another.

2) I was picking up DS#1 from daycare and these twins (b/g) that were in his class at the time starting freaking out that I was not picking them up - the teachers said I looked a lot like their mom, but I have rarely seen either of these kids since as they are in different classrooms now.

3) My SIL said at a dinner one night right after we announced we were pg "I can't believe we will have 2 more little ones this time next Christmas running around" (of course she was referring to the "1" I was expecting and her having luck getting pg, which unfortunately she hasn't had yet, but I am keeping my fingers crossed...) but I told them about the dream and remember saying something like "maybe even 3 more?"

(And of course there is the fact that we used Clomid this cycle so we knew there was a chance, but my mid-cycle u/s revealed only 1 follicle that OB said was "likely too immature" and gave me an Rx for a higher dose for the next cycle)

So I was just curious if any of you had the "mother's intuition" about having twins, or more, before you found out????

Re: S/O "How can you tell you are having twins?".....

  • I just *knew* from the second I knew we were finally pregnant. When they saw the first sac I just sort of looked at the technician and said--ok where is the second one?

But we did bravelle and menopur and had 2 failed cycles before we finally got pregnant. So when I was, and we got the blood tests and me, the girl whos hormone levels are always zilch for everything had hormone levels through the roof---I think we all kinda knew.

Its perfect though, because I wanted 2 and DH only wanted to have kids 1ce so we're only doing this once, but I get my two children.

  • Yeah I sort of had a feeling, but I had just gone through an IUI cycle with 4 mature follicles so honestly I was praying there would only be one or two and not more!

But after I got my 1st beta back I knew it was pretty high so I did have a feeling it was multiples.

I also have a funny story that wasn't really intuition but I think it's pretty cool. At the beginning of the cycle I got pregnant on, my mom got me a St. Gerard medal that she took to her church to have blessed. Well she had never met this priest before, I guess he was just "passing through" or something. So she told him about me and asked him to bless the medal. He said "ok I will, but does your daughter want twins?" and my mom said "yes, actually, she does" (God had laid twins on my heart a few months prior) and he said "ok good because whenever I do this, the couple ends up with twins". I put the medal on my bracelet right away and 16 days later my sweet girls were conceived! :)

  • I said this on the post, but I was seeing two of everything.  My mom and my dad both joked with me that it was twins, and I just laughed about it.  The week before my ultrasound I was being stalked by pairs of animals.  I would look out the window and see two birds sitting next to each other in the tree, two squirrels playing in the back yard, two rabbits just standing on their hind legs staring at me.  I remember calling my mom and telling her and we just laughed.  I never actually thought I could possible be pregnant with twins.  I was oh so wrong!

    High five.

You could have knocked me over with a feather when the Dr. told me there were two in there.  I was still in denial that I was actually pregnant.

  • My DH had me take 2 pg tests. Obv both were pos. and I joked that it better not mean I was having 2 babies! Then I had m/s right away and felt waaay more terrible than my 1st pg. Sister kept saying "you're having twins". I called her mean for wishing that on me, since we were only prepared to have 2 kids total. Then I noticed I was losing weight everywhere else but my belly due to m/s and thought it was just b/c it was 2nd pg. but I was surprised at how fast I seemed to get a little bump.

All the jokes about twins and the signs all made sense at my 9 week u/s when they saw 2 girls!  I don't know about any intuition, the news was part shock and then also sort of made sense considering. It took a while for it to sink in and now, even though I only wanted 2 kids total, feel super blessed for my little girls on the way.

  • I know this isn't supposed to be a reliable marker for twins, but my HCG levels nearly quadrupled in a 48-hour period.  So... I wondered, y'know?  I thought maybe I was having a molar pregnancy or something - following a recent miscarriage, I didn't think I'd be lucky enough to conceive again on my first try.  But there they were!
  • We had always joked about having twins. Then after the IF and doing an IUI, we knew we had 2 mature follicles, so it was a possibility. When the test showed positive (night before Thanksgiving) we were ecstatic. The next day I asked him to get me seconds on the food and he said "Well, you are eating for 3!" I smacked him...

Fast forward to January 9th when I FINALLY had my first U/S at 9 weeks after having been gone for the holidays... I would have never in my wildest dreams guessed triplets. He said twins, I laughed and said "Okay!" Then he said triplets and I just laughed and asked "Are you kidding me?!" Mothers intuition definitely did not help me there!

  • I was doing acupuncture treatments as a latch ditch effort to get pregnant on our own before beginning other interventions, and the very first time I went, after they had put all the needles in, I closed me eyes, and I had the most vivid image of two little boys.  First, they had their backs turned to me, and as I walked closer, they both turned around and smiled at me.  Then it was over.  I told my DH about it.  I was pregnant two cycles later.

Then, two days before my first ultrasound at 6w6d, I had a dream that there were two (boys) again.  I had no other reason to think it was twins, and actually didn't even consider that it really could be.

  • This isn't about me but it is a weird story.  My best friend has an aunt that had twins, they are 35 years old.  I was talking to her when I met her a few weeks ago and she told me that she had no idea she was having twins until she delivered, which 35 years ago I guess I could believe that.  She had an older daughter and like 2 weeks before she delivered the older daughter said " what are we going to name my baby sisters?" and then she said " we will name one Julie and one Jessica." They thought she was just joking around.  She ended up having two girls.  They named one of them Julie :)

My dad actually has twins too, my step sisters are fraternal twins.  My dad's first wife had no idea she was having twins until she delivered also.  That was 30 years ago.  I am so glad we have better technology these days!  The night she delivered she was 1st told she had one baby and a big tumor.  My sister (who was baby B) still doesn't like the idea that they thought she was a tumor.

  • We did injectibles, and after the trigger shot I had (what felt like) cramping on both sides of my belly. I've never been one of those "I'm so in tune with my body" type of person, but I thought that might mean I had ovulated twice.  Still, I had fewer mature follies than when we conceived our daughter, so the odds of multiples didn't seem that high.  Then my beta was 3-4 times higher than with my 1st pregnancy, but the nurse said "that isn't always a sign of multiples."

Still, between the beta and my 7 week U/S I felt all this cramping, tugging and stretching I didn't feel with my daughter, so in the back of my mind I was thinking "what if it's twins?"  Well, I show up for the U/S, the tech is checking everything... "Baby looks great!" and I was a little disappointed that she hadn't seen a 2nd sac.  I told her about the cramping and other pains, and she offered to check my ovaries, to make sure they were getting back to normal after being stimulated during the cycle.  THAT's when this bubble, as I call it, moved across the screen and she blurted out "There are two!"  I was shocked, but at the same time not so shocked, if that makes sense.

  • I did and I didn't. I had a dream one night that I was having twins and it was so REAL it took me a few hours after I woke up to realize I was actually only pregnant with one (so I thought). Anyways, that dream sort of stuck in my mind so I kept telling DH "wouldn't twins be fun, a boy and a girl, one for each of us", I actually creeped the multiples board, I think it was wishful thinking (you know like all the other lurkers who don't realize how hard and risky twins are). Still at my u/s I was shocked, but not surprised, hard to explain I guess.

No one in my family believed us when we phoned and said it was twins because I kept telling them prior "I think I am having twins", I didn't really mean it, but they expected us to tell them twins as a joke. It took a solid hour of convincing my mom on the phone that we were not playing a joke on her.

  • I asked the embryologist in the lab before my FET if the embryos could still split.  She said that hadn't happened in the 5 years she worked there.  I think deep inside, I thought I might have identical twins.  Weird.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • I did follistim and had 3-4 follicles. I knew there was a chance there as more than one, but I had no gut feeling at all. I just knew I was pg. Once the betas started coming back and were pretty high, my DH suspected twins or more. After I found out it was twins though, I had a feeling it was two girls :)
  • These are some pretty cool stories. I love the one about the tumor and Kristens about the St. Gerard metal.

As for me i struggled long and hard to get these babies and everytime my IVF cycle didnt work or i had a m/c i would say "its b/c im meant to have twins". Well my lucky cycle we transferred 4 embryos on day 3. The doctor said 2 looked great and i have a great shot at twins but, at that point i didnt believe it. When my beta came back double what it was with my son i had a strong feeling it was twins...a boy and a girl. I was right! When we went in for the u/s and the doctor said "lets see how many are in there." then said it was twins, i just said "i knew it and its b/g". We were probably the most stoic couple finding out about it. lol

Then i freaked out a few weeks later!

  • Because I had 3-4 mature follies at the time of my IUI, and my betas were doubling faster than 48 hours, I knew that it was possible.  Other than that though, no clues, intuitions, feelings, signs, etc.  Even knowing that it was a very likely possibility, I was still shocked when the ER doctor told me there were two in there.  Of course at that point, going through the same scenario that I went through during my first two m/c's, I would have been almost as shocked if she had told me there was one live baby in there with a beating heart.  But two, and they were both growing on time and had flickers of heartbeats?  I almost died right there.
  • I had no idea at all. We did menpuir and HCG but at my last u/s I had only 1 mature follicle. When I had my m/c in Aug of last year we had 3 follicles and only 1 baby took. So this time when then tech asked me how many follicles I had I told her 1 why had many did she see? She told me 4 I started crying and my DH asked her to recount. She then said 3 had heartbeats so we kind of thought would only 3. Even after we left I kept half expecting to get a call from them saying that there machine was messed up and only one baby never happened.

  • I don't think I had an intuition or feeling that I was having twins.  I did think it was a little suspicious that I started gaining weight and getting a little belly so early in pregnancy.  By my 10 week appointment I had already gained 8 lbs and none of my jeans fit any more.  My mom joked that I might be having twins.  After she put the idea in my head I did have a dream that I gave birth to twins.  I never seriously thought it was true though.  My DH thought I was crazy up until the u/s.  Even my OB was surprised because she almost missed seeing the 2nd baby.
  • On the day of my transfer my RE high fives me when we were done and said you are going to have twins! Then my betas were really high so RE suspected. At the first u/s he told us he saw three sacs but one was empty so twins. We were so excited! At the next u/s I was there by myself because DH was on a business trip- that was a crazy phone call to make to tell him there were three heartbeats and it was triplets! I was freaking out for a few days. I said we really got our money's worth from our IVF haha! When I tell people I'm having triplets they usually don't believe me at first. As far as symptoms I really had none until at 8 weeks when m/s started.

  • Even before I got preg, I joking told hubby that we were gonna have twins. He only wanted 1 more (we already had a DD),  and I wanted 2 more. And he was hoping for a boy the 2nd time around. I went to my 1st u/s alone because it was early and just to figure out gestational age. Low and behold, "A" and "B" popped on the screen. I was laughing so hard I was crying, the u/s tech asked if I was ok, and I told her how I'd been teasing about twins. DH and I never do anything simple, and that pregnancy was no different! LOL

  • I didn't have a clue.  I didn't have once ounce of mother's intuition.  My husband on the other hand "just knew".  He wasn't at all shocked when the doc told us we needed two cribs.  He also just knew they were b/g.  He got father's intuition :)  At least one of us had it.

  • I had a feeling and said it to my husband. This was my 6th pregnancy and I had never once said it before. My other 5 pregnancies were all from fertility treatments and this one wasn't. I always thought it was so weird that I after all of those fertility treatments I never thought it was twins and then for the spontaneous pregnancy I did.

  • I did have an intuition but ignored it because I had thought my second pregnancy was twins and it was just one. So I ignored my intuition with my third pregnancy and didn't have an ultrasound or find out that there were two in there until 18 weeks. Whoops.
  • Nope, but we put in 2 embryos with our IVF so I knew there was a chance but I thought it was pretty slim.

  • I thought there was a chance because I had used Clomid. About 5 days before AF was supposed to show up my 3 yr old nephew told me at dinner "You have a baby in your tummy" and I responded back "No babies in my tummy". I mean how do you explain to a 3 yr old that you have been trying for a baby but no such luck! He then told me this about 5 more times and he was dead serious...Took a pregnancy test 2 days later and it came out positive.

My nephew than started to say that there was two babies (a boy and a girl). I remember telling our Dr this at our 8 wk ultrasound. When the Dr did the ultrasound he states "well it looks like your nephew was wrong there is only one heartbeat". When we told our nephew that there was only one baby he said "One is hiding". He never changed his mind. DH and his family always joked that there was two because Tyler said so! Fast forward to my 21 week ultrasound and guess what? There was two baby boys (I guess he got 2 out of 3 right).

  • I had a m/c before we got pregnant with the girls, so we (thought) we would be pretty cautious about announcing the pregnancy.  My SIL came down to visit about a week after I got my BFP, and my DH and I had to tell her.  While she was visiting us, she first mentioned that she thought we would have twins.  Then making breakfast one morning she cracked an egg and saw 2 yolks.  Then during a random conversation with my grandfather, he started talking about a play they saw years ago that was about twins.  I had the thought in the back of my mind when I went in for my u/s so when he found 2 babies at 6 weeks I wasn't utterly stunned.  I also found out that the house we were renting at the time had 2 previous residents that each had a set of twins while renting that house.
  • When we were TTC I told DF that I have always wanted twins, the day I told my parents we were expecting, my dad says I have a feeling you are going to have twins. The night before our 20w u/s my fianc? said what if we find out we are havings twins and I told him I feel like we might, the moment we walked into the office I knew she was going to tell us we were having two babies and she did!

  • I wouldn't say that I 'KNEW' as the idea sounded so ludacris to me at the time...

But I had dreams... or I'd catch myself looking at 'What to expect when you are expecting Twins' Articles and be like... WHY the heck am I reading this!?

In reality I just thought I was losing my mind and didnt know why all these twin thoughts kept popping up... NEVER did it occur to me that it might be some kind of intuition and I could ACTUALLY be expecting twins. We had NO fertility treatments, no family history, nada... So VERY unexpected.

  • I had a feeling. I know everyone says m/s is not an indication but thats what made me think I was having twins. With my first pg(ended in loss)and with my son I had no m/s. With the twins, I had to eat as soon as I felt hungry or I got sick(whether there was food in my stomach or not).

When I went to the dr at 9wks, he did a dating u/s and we saw 2sacs and hbs. To tell my h how many we were having I got him lunch, 2 cheeseburgers. I got home and he asked how many, as in how many babies. I said look in the bag, he looked and said oh 1, sounding disappointed. I said you better look again since we are having 2. He just kept saying I knew it, I knew it. The m/s tipped him off I guess.
