Work at a Daycare?

Since I am still obsessing about the income/job thing, I have been thinking this evening.  I am thinking about applying at daycares-I could take the baby with me, and receive a discount on her care.  This would allow me to be closer to home, be able to check in on her during the day if I have breaks or whatever, and still have alot less stress than my teaching job that I left.  I worked at one before I started teaching elementary, and one thing about it was that you got to enjoy the kids alot more without all the added pressures of grading, lesson-planning, meetings, etc.  It would also keep me somewhat in the teaching field.  Of course, the pay would be much less than what I have been making, but I had planned on that anyway.  Sounds like it may be the solution i've been looking for.  WDYT?

Re: Work at a Daycare?

  • Not to sound mean (I promise!), but as a past center director, I kind of gave the side eye to applicants who came in and said they needed to bring their kids in when they were working.  Not only would it have made scheduling tricky (can't put you in a program with your own kid), but in general it could be awkward with the other staff.  Plus, there could be an impact on the budget, as your infant would be taking up a spot that I may have been able to fill at full cost.  I know where I was before, you wouldn't even be eligible for a discount until X hours were worked by you.  It might be tougher than you think.  What about sitting for another child in your own home?  Hope this helps!   :)

  • I agree with PP, they probably get a lot of applications from Mom's who want to bring their LO's to work.  I think watching a couple of other children in your own home sounds like it could work better.

  • I thought about doing the same thing, but my family relies on my health insurance so I will be staying at my teaching job. I  used to work at a daycare chain and a lot of the teachers' kids went there. It was annoying because they were always taking breaks to go see their children, and I felt like their children needed to be treated differently because their parents were there "watching". But it won't hurt to look into it at least, and then weigh out all of your options. Good Luck!

  • Could you start your own in-home daycare?  I know a lot of new moms think about doing that.  I actually am contemplating it as a future option.  I love working with kids and would love also to spend time with my own children.  I am planning on staying at my current job right now, but if it ever came down to it, it's definitely something I would consider doing.

I am a nanny and I will be bringing my son to work with me after maternity leave. I am lucky to be able to do this because a lot of my nanny friends have been fired for becoming pregnant. And then it can be hard to find a new nanny job that will let you bring your newborn (versus bringing a toddler or older child).  BUT, it's worth a shot to look around for a nanny job. There are a few websites that help families find nannies, and you could try to find an agency in your area too. Let me know if you want more info on the websites.

  • I thnk it is a pretty good idea. I work at a daycare now and plan on having my son enrolled there. I too have my degree in teaching but I would like to hold off finding a teaching job until he is a little older. It is just easier this way. I am close to my co-workers and I know they will take care of him as if he was their own.

That makes me feel better!  I was starting to doubt that idea now, too!  It sounds like a good solution.  Hopefully I will be able to get a job at a daycare, I feel like since there are so many around here there is bound to be one hiring at some point.
