pumping while on vacation at an AI- possible TMI

DH and I are going on to an AI resort in two weeks. My parents are coming down to stay with the kiddo.

I plan on partaking in quite a few beverages and I know I'll have to pump and dump at times.

We will have a fridge in our room that I could keep and store milk in when it's *safe* to use.

The TMI part is what if I have stomach issues/sickness while in Mexico. One time I went I had some issues with the unpasteurized cheese. Would that cause issues in the BM for the kiddo if I bring it back?

I'm taking those medela wipes to clean my horns etc with so I don't have to use the water. I'm just nervous about what I ingest.

Am I worrying for nothing? The thought of duping 5 days worth of milk makes me want to cry!

  • I would check to see if the resort has a water filtration system.  If so, then you have less to worry about.  Does your room have a microwave?  if so, you can use the Medela steam bags.

I think your milk will be fine, even if you get sick.

  • If the kid is NOT going with you (they're rarely allowed at AI places, right?), I can't imagine transporting 5 days of milk back...for me that's over 200 oz. As much as it sucks, I'd probably dump it just to avoid the hassle of keeping it cold (often the in-room friges suck) and getting it home cold. Then you wouldn't even have to worry about alcohol or other possible issues.

Oh I realize I won't be able to carry 5 days worth. There are a few days I plan on drinking all day long ;-)

I wanted to try and bring what I could back though so I didn't totally deplete my stash.

I just wanted to make sure if I had issues with food etc there it wouldn't effect my milk.

I go out of town often for work so getting it home cold is not something that's a new process for me.

  • I traveled with a colleague to a conference once and it was no problem for her to bring back 5 days worth of pumped milk.

Try to wait until your sober to pump, then you should be able to keep your milk.
  • According to kellymom.com there are very few illnesses that would require you to dump your milk. Food poisoning is NOT one of them. If you have stomach issues, you should be fine to keep the milk.
