Toddlers: 24 Months+

hmmmm - so toddler bed without rails? thoughts

DH converted DD's crib to a toddler bed today while I wasn't home.  We had discussed it a few days ago, but then I thought decided not to do it today.  but, umm. .. he went ahead and did it.  OK fine, whatever, needs to be done anyway.  But, he tell me the conversion kit we had only converts it to a full size bed - I thought it came w/ the toddler bed rails - but he says no.  So - now we have a 3 sided bed.  Do you think we should go ahead and let her try it tonight w/o the rails?  We can convert it back to the crib tonight if needed.

  • Try it out. DD's doesn't have the side rails and she has not had any accidents. We don't have a box spring or anything with it so it is pretty low to the ground.

(I had wanted toddler rails and specifically picked a bed that had the option to buy them. I wanted to order everything for the conversion when we bought the crib, DH said no, we can wait. Yeah well, we go to buy the conversion and it is being discontinued, so no rails! Grrr, DH!)

    Gotta love husbands! :-)

Do does it mean that you basically have the crib minus one side?  If so, that's exactly like my DDs have and they do fine with it.  They are so low to the ground that even when DDs fall out, they are fine.  I have one DD that likes to sleep on the edge so occasionally we'll hear a thud and then see her climb back into bed on the video monitor. :-)

    yes, exactly.

Yeah. .. I told him we (he) needed to get the childproof door knob covers and strap the furniture to the walls before we could do the bed conversion and he sort of balked at that - which was fine w/ me.  but apparently, after I left today, he decided it wasn't that big a deal.  We'll see how it goes tonight.

  • DS is older than your DD but when we put him in a twin bed, we didn't do rails and he's been fine.  I kind of tuck his quilt under the mattress on the side that's not up against the wall and so far, knock on wood, he's done great!  A friend of ours actually took a pool noodle and put it under her son's sheets instead of rails and that worked for him too.
  • Ours came with a little ladder looking thing to act as a front rail (to keep her from falling out). We used that for about 9 months and then I took it off and she's been fine without it.

  • Definitely try it without the rails.  DD's been in a toddler bed for a while and hasn't once gotten out or fallen out.  She's now in the full size with no rails.  I used the pool noodle / Magic Bumpers for about a week and they were more of a pain for me to climb over.  Hope she does well with it!  I also turned DD's doorknob around when we moved her to a bed so she can't lock herself in (I'd never lock it from the outside, I just don't want her to lock it from the inside!)
  • We don't use bed rails.  Granted, C's bed isn't very high (it's actually a futon) but he's never rolled off of it - and that's including when he just had the mattress part starting at 15 months.
  • DD2's been in a full size bed, no rails since 20 months. She's fallen out once, and that was recently. You can buy rails from the store if you need to.

  • When we switched dd1 at 24 months, we just put a mattress and box spring on the floor (no bed or rails etc) She fell out once (the first night and slept through it!) I put of pillows on the floor next to the bed. She never did it again, and it was a pretty smooth transition. We also didn't do anything else to the room as the outlets were already covered.

  • DD's crib did not come with a toddler rail, but it could be purchased separately.  That is what we did.  We also bought the child-proof door handles since she now knows how to open the exterior doors of our home.
