Some of you asked for an update on Oliver's dentist appointment, so here I am!
We survived. It wasn't fun, but he made it through. The dentist was really nice and talked to me for awhile beforehand about basic stuff like diet and drinks, brushing, flossing, etc. When it was time for the exam, they had me sit in the chair side-saddle with Ollie on my lap, facing me. Then the dentist and I sat knees to knees and she leaned him backwards so his head was in her lap. He screamed bloody murder, she counted his teeth, he screamed bloody murder, she did a full (and crazy quick) cleaning, just like adults would get, he screamed bloody murder, she applied a topical (flouride?) treatment and then it was over. I don't know how long it took, but it was FAST!
As for his staining, she said some kids produce more of a bacteria that encourages stains and that Ollie is likely one of those kids. Nothing we can really do about it except brush a lot (she recommended 3x a day) and do cleanings every 6 months. I'm just relieved that all of the staining is gone for now and it wasn't something more sinister. Oh, and one of his front teeth is (slightly) chipped, which I never noticed before. But he falls on his face often enough that I'm not too surprised.
Anyway, there wasn't much to it - sorry for the novel about it. It wasn't fun but it wasn't torture either (and Oliver was over the trauma pretty quickly).
Re: Ollie survived the dentist
Sounds great! Kind of a combination of my DS's experiences -- the posing and emotions of the first time, and the treatments he gets now that he's older. Glad to hear the staining is all clear for now!
(I have Mom-paranoia that people think we don't take care of DS's teeth because of his brown spots... Little do they know he has gone to the dentist more than any other kid I know his age.
There's nothing they can do to make them go away since it's not a stain. I'm sure you're relieved that Ollie's are gone!)
