1st time flying tomorrow

So we are flying down to South Carolina tomorrow and it will be Nicholas' first time and our first time flying with a kid. Any last minute tips or suggestions? I plan on bringing our 2 carry on bags, diaper bag (filled with toys, snacks, bottle of milk, etc.) and our medical cooler with his meds. Anything we should know-- oh and we are flying out of Dayton if that makes a difference. TIA!

  • You can't take the milk. No liquids over 4 ozs, and those liquids need to be in a ziploc bag and taken out to go through security. You may need to call the airline and ask how to handle the meds. No syringes will be allowed on board either. You may need to check 1 bag because medicines, liquids, and needles are allowed in a checked bag. Hope you have a good trip!

  • Online it said that medical equipment doesnt count as a carry on bag, its a "free extra" kinda thing. Plus syringes and needles are allowed since we have a prescription and a dr's note.

I thought you could take formula or breast milk though?

  • If you are flying on Air Tran, do not even bother bringing the car seat through the airport.  They will check it at the gate.  That has been our experience twice now.  It is a giant PITA to carry it to the gate, only to have them take it at boarding.  Their seats won't accommodate the car seat, and they know it...but they don't admit that.  DD did fine both times sitting in the seat between us.  Bring a portable DVD and crayons and paper.  Anything to entertain him.  Above all, have a fantastic trip!!!!

  • You are allowed formula and Breast milk but be prepared to taste it to prove it isn't explosive!  Also TSA in Dayton from my experience are pretty nice,.

  • When I flew home out of O'hare for work last week, I had at least 25 oz of breast milk, some in containers over 4 oz and it was easy. Just keep any 'medical liquids' including formula/breast milk out and hand it to them before it would go through X-ray and request alternative screening. They take it and inspect it to the side. I think he opened up one bottle of breast milk and looked at it. I didn't have to smell it or taste it, nor should you.

    Have a great trip!

  • I took a bottle of milk for Owen and a cup for Maggie when we flew to Florida in May. They examined it separately but it wasn't a problem.

  • I flew with fertility meds and that included syringes. They looked everything over but didn't really question a thing. Have a great trip!
