teething and not wanting to nurse

SO this just happened and I need advice!  I think LO is starting to teethe and tonight he didn't want to nurse =(  Here's the deal:

He ate a little but then as soon as he was latched he would pull off screaming, and did this over and over for almost 10 minutes.  Finally, I just had DH give him a bottle, which he took less than 2 oz of before falling asleep (I think he was tired from crying!)

I tried giving him a cold teether to chew on to try to numb up a little before trying to nurse again, but that didn't work...

Any experience with this, or is it not even related to teething??  I also went back to work 2 weeks ago so he has been taking bottles during the day when I am not home.  Other than this, he has been nursing fine when I am home!   Any help is much appreciated~ TIA!!

Re: teething and not wanting to nurse

  • DD did this alot when she started teething and does it often when a tooth is about to break the surface.  I just nursed whenever she showed hunger signs.  She worked thru the pain in a day or two and went back to nursing normally.

  • This happened to us too, and I'm pretty sure it was teething.  I cried through the whole bottle, because I thought he was starting to self-wean!  But by the next time he was hungry I offered the breast and he nursed.  Has happened a couple random times since then.  He'll get back on the boob, just make sure to keep offering!

  • I just read on the bump countdown calendar that at 16 weeks babies start teething and don't nurse well because of the pain with sucking.  It suggested to massage your breasts before you nurse to help with let down.

  • You can try giving tylenol half an hour before breastfeeding to see whether it makes a difference. There is a growth at 3 months, though, so that is also a possibility.

This is what I thought!  He fussed again at bedtime last night, but did ok today so far...I totally was in panic mode when I thought he wouldn't nurse!!  Thanks ladies for the reassurance!
