My DH, a group of our friends and I have been planning on going to Missouri for a float trip. We'll be camping and floating in the river in canoes all day. Well, I just found out I'm pregnant and will be about 6 weeks when we go. I've read some stuff on-line that has made me nervous and now I don't know if I'm overreacting or if I really shouldn't go.
Things that worry me:
-Won't be close to a hospital if anything went wrong
-Bacteria in the water
-I'm going to have to pee every 30 minutes
-It's going to be hot and humid...overheating the baby??
Would you go?
Re: Float trip when 6 weeks
Yes, I would go. I've answered your questions below based on my previous pregnancy.
Won't be close to a hospital if anything went wrong
More than likely, if something were to happen (God forbid) there is not much a hospital can do for you at 6 weeks. They might do an u/s to check, but that is not going to stop you from m/c.
-Bacteria in the water -
This only happens when it is REALLY hot and in stagnent water. I mean, I live in TX and we only see cases of this in late August when we have over 100 degree temps weeks in a row.
-I'm going to have to pee every 30 minutes
Peeing every 30 min doesn't really start until later in the prengancy.
-It's going to be hot and humid...overheating the baby??
No, if you drink plenty of water you should be fine.
Would you go?
Yes.
I would go. I think the likelihood of something happening due to the trip are pretty minimal. Consider it a good stress reliever for you and DH to go and spend some quality time with your friends - and stress relievers are ALWAYS good for the baby
DH and I have a trip to ME planned for our anniversary when I'll be about 7 weeks pregnant including hiking and biking on cobblestone roads. I have no worries that anything on the trip will cause a problem. My biggest concern is possible m/s on the plane
You will be fine.
ETA: Keep hydrated and make sure to wear lots of sunscreen.

I personally would not go because I go on an annual trip with a bunch of friends and if I wasn't drinking they would definitely be suspect. Plus, I just wouldn't have that much fun (being the only sober person around a bunch of drunks can get annoying IMO). But then again, I don't know if your group drinks while floating so you may be ok.
I don't think you have to worry about the other things. Bacteria in the water should not affect you. Most people just pee in the river, so just take a swim when you gotta go. As for overheating you should just drink plenty of water and you should be fine.
Where do you guys go? We are in the KC area and we go every year to the Niangua. I will not be floating this year obviously, but my DH and friends are all still going.
I personally would not go...
I wouldn't worry about not being around a hospital because like pp said, there is not much they can do in case something went wrong.
I would be afraid of bacteria in the water. If something is going to happen to anyone (that is like one in a million chance) it would to me
I pee every 30 min anyway, I do go more often since I am pg
I don't think you can overheat the baby, drink plenty.
But the one that I would be afraid about is M/S.....I have servere M/S and would be miserable if I went
That being said you have to do what you want to do. no one can make that decision.
another thing, call the doc and ask them.....they can answer the questions you have and direct you better
I went floating down the river several times when I was pregnant with DS. Everything was just fine. The part was nervous about was the rapids at the end, though we were able to go through a mild part of them each time or else the water was just high enough that they didn't bother me.
I woud definately go, UNLESS there were several areas of rapids that you wouldn't be able to avoid and you wouldn't be able to find a safe path through. Other then that I say go and have fun.
Oh as to peeing every 30 minutes, I'm sorry to say but we go on a four hour tubing ride when we go and I KNOW that it's not just me that goes in the water even when not pregnant.
Stay hydrated, just bring a little cooler with you filled with some ice and bottles of water. Put the cooler into a tube that fits nice and tight around it (like barely bale to get around the cooler), tie it to your tube and off you go!!
I would definitely go! My DH and I bought kayaks 2 days before we found out we were expecting. It's not stopping me from getting out on the water. My doctor even gave me the "ok" to do it. I think she said "You're pregnant, not broken" lol.
If you're worried about not being close to a hospital if anything went wrong... well, there isn't much a hospital can do for you. I've had two losses and really, there is nothing that can be done, you just have to wait it out.
If you're in fast moving water, there isn't too much to worry about with bacteria... Just don't drink the water from the river.
Peeing every 30 minutes... Well, I say just go in the water
Overheating the baby... Just drink plenty of water!
I would be more concerned over having morning sickness on the trip but if you're not experiencing m/s then I say there should be nothing to stop you from going! Go have a good time!
