3rd Trimester

Leg Cramps anyone??

I've been waking up in the middle of the night with horrible leg cramps (ouchh!)  They hurt so bad I even wake up my DH screaming.  I get them almost twice a week since my third tri started.  I have been eating bananas every day and lots of water(which is supposed to help) but I still get them:(  Anyone on the same boat??

  • Leg cramps are the worst!!! Try some B6 pills.....

  • This is going to sound SO weird but put a bar of soap in your bed. A good friend of mine says his wife and his mother swear by it. It is supposed to help pain and prevent cramps.

I don't use it personally but I also know my dog will eat it.

  • I get them frequently at night, too. Although, I'm usually quick to stretch it out before it becomes really bad and I've been lucky that they haven't been full blown cramps. Nothing I do helps...they just come. Sad

  • In addition to the water, potassium and B6 pills stretch by flexing your feet (pulling your toes toward your head) before you go to bed.  Also, make sure the covers at the foot of your bed are loose,  if they are too tight you sleep with your toes pointed and cramp more.  Finally, if you wake up right before it happens (I don't know if it is normal to or if I have just conditioned by body to do it) resist the urge to point your feet and stretch, flex them instead.

  • Eat a banana everyday. If I go 1 day without a banana I will have them at night! Happened in both my pregnancies!

EDIT: Sorry, I didn't read that you have been eating bananas already! I'm not sure what else to do then! Maybe 2 bananas?

This is weird. LOL! I have been eating peanut butter because I don't eat bananas and that has seemed to help me.

  • I get them at night.  Mine are less painful and more just annoying can't sleep.  I stretch and strech and drink water.  I hadn't heard about eating bananas, but will try it.

  • it's agonizing!  i get them...i rock my foot side to side (not up and down) and it goes away...my SIL said that her friend got them every night and she kept an ice pack in a cooler on the side of her bed every night and when it would happen, she would set the pack no the floor and put the arch of her foot on it and it would relieve it immediately...i prefer the rocking of my foot b/c the ice pack is too much of a hassle for me!  i'm getting lazy!

  • Wow! lots of advice.  Tank You :)  I will try stretching my calves before going to bed.  That's the one thing I haven't tried yet.

  • I get them all the time. I have no idea if this is true or not, but my stepmom says it is from taking so many vitamins. She started getting really bad cramps also when she took alot of vitamins (I'm not sure which vitamin specifically causes them).

  • I got them in the worst way around the same week you are currently.  Calcium definitely helped, as did having my DH stretch my legs when I got them late at night.  He was a runner, so he knew exactly what stretches and massages would help.

I'm getting them again for some reason (I'm 37w 1d), but I think that's because my body is just tired...and I gained 4 pounds in one week.  :/

I see you live in Maryland.  If you have any Wawa's near you, get a smoothie that includes banana.  While the other fruit smoothies are usually a mix, the banana ones use one whole real banana.  They are SOOOOO good and cool and wonderful.  They helped a lot with my leg cramps because I got calcium and potassium in one shot.  :D

  • pull your toes back and it should stop right away!
