Babies on the Brain

I would hope an interviewee wouldn't look like that

Picture this:

It is casual friday at work so I am wearing jeans. Sitting in the lobby, slouching in the chair with my feet up on the table in front of me. I am playing on my iPhone. (yes, very professional... but I am on break so I got comfy)

The (new) guy from HR comes out, I don't notice him, he intterupts my Angry Birds game and says "Are you, so-and-so?" I said "no, I am not"

So my thought is that someone is coming for an interview. I can't imagine that someone who is coming for an interview would be in jeans, playing on a phone and have their feet up on a table. (and also be wearing the hospital-issued employee name tag)

  • You would be surprised what people show up to an interview wearing.

My personal favorite was the girl who came dressed up all sex-kittenish and still managed to get the job. Didn't pass her probation, but that she got hired at all simply floored me. (and we're talking cleeeeeeeevage.)

  • Sheesh... I wore dress pants and a dressy shirt with heels (and a blazer if it's winter).. even when I applied to be a lifeguard in high school.

People come into my work all the time in filthy jeans and shirts with sleeves cut out (I work in an office!) asking if we are hiring or to turn in their apps... They are wearing ball caps and smell bad. I think we just toss the app as soon as it's turned in unless they look like they are trying.

Oh yeah?  I think she or her clone got hired as an attorney at my firm a month ago. This is what happens when men do the hiring.

  • My parents made me wear a skirt/blouse/blazer with little hoop earrings when I applied for jobs. My dad kept telling me how important it was to make a first impression, handshake, speak clearly, all that. This other girl and I were applying for the same job, and she got it. I had the better resume (for a HS kid), but she had the better push up bra and lycra miniskirt. I was crushed.
