NBR: Anyone have experience with mee t u p?

I'm thinking of looking into groups on Me etup to get more social interaction now that I'm single. Don't necessarily want to do a singles group or anything but I want get some good friends because all my friends since moving to Austin years ago are associated with ex. I mean I only have a couple months to find a new tailgating group since ex has a gf and I don't see myself hanging out with them. Me etup isn't a bunch of weirdos is it?

  • I have a few friends that are very active in Me et up. If you'd like I introduce you via FB.

  • I am a member of the working mom's group (they have age-based and location-based meet ups on evenings and weekends).  I have been to one meet up with DD and enjoyed it, will definitely be going to more.  Everyone seemed pretty normal :)
  • My coworker and her H are very active on meet up, especially for active groups like hiking and kayaking. I think they lead a kayaking group that started there. Definitely not all weirdos.

  • I belong to a few groups through that site, but ... um, I could be considered weird.

I've found that there are all kinds people there, just like with any large group. You have some that are a little out there and some that are pretty darn cool. For example, I brought a bottle of wine to a potluck I went to through one of the groups. The host asked me to take it back to my car because he didn't want any alcohol in his house. It was kind of a weird moment and the dud is a little odd, but everyone else was really nice and since then I've become friends with some and just avoid the gtgs at that "no alcohol in my house!" dude's house.

Personally, I like the activity focused groups the best -- book clubs, knitting groups, etc.

  • I joined a Mom's group in BR on meet up. They all seem nice so far.
  • i've too a few meetup events and for the most part people were pretty normal Wink
  • I've been to a meetup play group regularly for about a year now. Everyone is normal and we've made some good friends. I think it's worth trying out. Just don't give up if the first group you try is awkward or something.

  • I belong to one for my dog Embarrassed.

I've enjoyed it for the most part. I've only been to a few but I never joined one for DS because I hardly make the ones for my dog.

This. I was more active when I first moved here and didn't really know anyone. Now I don't have time to see my friends that I have, so I don't do much. It's hit or miss, but one of my best friends I met through the knitting group.
