Success after IF

what did you give as first solid food?

Meaning the very first time?  Would you give something different if you did it all again?

We started with rice cereal with K to get her some iron, but I'm thinking of switching it up a a bit with E, maybe a veggie to start.

K started solids at 6 months 1 week, which is today with E -- eeek!  But K had a leap year in there, so we have until tomorrow with E, right? ;)  Her pedi so wasn't worried today so we may wait longer -- DH and I haven't even started to talk about it!

Thank you!

Re: what did you give as first solid food?

  • We started with avocado!  Cal loved it!  But didn't like it again for quite some time...he did go back to loving it though.  Yes, I'm sure we'll do the same for this baby.  :)

  • We just started at 7 months : )  You have some time if you want : )

Actually, we started about a week ago.  I did sweet potato first, then banana, then avocado.  I don't follow the 4 day rule.

I do iron supplements instead of cereal, since I'm breastfeeding still.

Thanks!  I actually had written a "veggie/avocado" and then I deleted avocado since I wanted to be open with my question.  Great minds think alike, perhaps!  Kira loved avocado once we started giving it to her, but that was after beans and peas too, if I recall.  Thanks again! :)

Cool -- thanks!  I was hearing "4 months...4 months" all the time when Kira was a baby, so I was already a rebel by waiting a week past 6 months!  But I'm really not worried; as I said DH and I haven't even talked about it!

Thanks for your food/iron thoughts too, LVB! :)

  • I'm pretty sure it was sweet potato around 5 months.  Not sure if I'll do the same for Ava or start her on oatmeal.

  • We did a banana. We did BLW and just waited until she showed signs of readiness. She was exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months and was showing all the signs at 6 months that she was ready. My SIL's criticized me for starting with a fruit and not a veggie, but a banana's flavor most closely mimics breastmilk, and I wasn't worried about her developing a preference for sweet over veggie. BM is sweet anyway!

ETA: I would do the exact same thing again.

  • We started with rice cereal at 4 months. This was recommended by the pediatrician since her weight dropped from the 25th percentile to 15th percentile otherwise I wasn't planning on introducing solid food until 6 months. She gained a pound in the first 2 weeks.  Vivi's enjoyed the cereal and the fruits/veggies we've gradually introduced.

  • His first solid was rice cereal mixed with breastmilk.  I had second thoughts after that and waited before giving him another meal (he was only 4 1/2 months old and was more than ready, but I wasn't).  But then he didn't poop for 12 days after that solid meal and we ended up having to give him prunes for a few days.  So I guess his first real meal was prunes.  Avodado was up there also.  But we did go back to rice cereal for some time and mixed it with veggies.  We did fruits last.

  • We started with avocado.  Thinking about doing baby lead weaning this time, so not sure if avocado would still be a good first choice for that.  I'm in no hurry, though, so still thinking about it.
  • I've started both of them with oatmeal at 6 months.  (Well a week shy of 6 mo.)  I followed it up with avocado for DS1 and plan to do the same with DS2.  Then I'll switch to veggies.  I bought some jars of winter squash, carrots, sweet potatoes, and peas & brown rice today.

Then I'll switch to fruits.  Since it is summer I might be ambitious and make purees of the seasonal fruits. Maybe.

  • we did it at 6 months both times, and with the boys we did rice cereal...and we had SUCH a terrible time with all cereal digestively that I started with sweet potatoes with A ;)

no prob at all, and it was totally okay'd by the pedi...and she had NO problem eating cereal later, in fact that girl will eat anything in her sight!

We started around 7 months - Sam didn't really display a lot of interest until then.  We tried avo and he did not like it.  We tried pears, we tried bananas, we tried sweet potatoes and nope nope nope.  Yogurt was the first "solid" food he really liked and managed to consume without vomiting.  I don't know - I say just try whatever you got :) If you're still BFing it's even a good time to introduce more "allergenic" foods (at least according to the nutrition researcher whose child is in Sam's class).  Whatever works!

We have that Earth's Best combo pack, too. ;)

Anyway, we started both boys on rice cereal mixed with BM and/or water. For DS2, we only did that 3 days, then started on veggies. Basically, we wanted a bland transition food to "test the waters" before introducing other foods. If he wasn't ready (which, OMG he was SOOOO ready!), then we would just back off after the 3 days of cereal.

So far, this kid looooooves to eat. DS1 would make funny faces and lose interest after a few bites, but DS2 would gobble up a whole jar (or more), given the opportunity! (We generally limit his solids intake for multiple reasons -- so he'll drink enough BM, digestion, etc. As he gets older, we'll increase the portion, or more likely, just add in another meal.) And he has loved everything he has tried so far -- lots of veggies and fruits. We don't really worry about doing sweet versus savory... But I do have a preference for alternating color...i.e. carrots, then peas, then sweet potatoes, then pears, etc.

I honestly think whatever you want to do is fine. If she's ready, you'll know.

One interesting thing I just read (in the info sent out by the state, actually) was a suggestion to start EBF babies on MEATS as the first food! They suggested grains for FF babies. The pedi, however, suggested we introduce lots of fruits and veggies and at least 3 grains (not sure why) before adding meats. Something interesting to consider...

  • Sweet potato.  She was underwhelmed but didn't hate it (well not until the next day when I mixed it with spoiled BM, then she hated it-- it was one of my not so great mother moments....)

I never bought the rice cereal thing (didn't seem to be any point to it)-- and unless MIL has given it to her, I don't believe she has ever had it. Oatmeal was her 3rd or 4th food I believe.

  • Applesauce at 4 months..he loved it and I'd do it again!

  • We tried cereal once...he hated it (and I really really wanted to do baby led weaning...)  but he was sooo interested in what I was eating...so..next we tried chunks of avocado..he took one bite and puked.  its one of two foods that he doesn't like to this day...lol!  We tried veggie purees, but he hated them...but he liked fruit purees and yogurt :)
  • Peaches!  They were so ripe and perfect.  I would recommend a veggie since the peaches are sweet and can spoil them, but DD is a good eater so I have no regrets.  And the orange peach smushed on her face is priceless!
  • Thank you so much, everyone!
