Success after IF

another sleep/nap question

Lately the babies have been waking before 6am (ugh). They usually go to sleep between 6:30-7pm, so they're getting 11 hours of sleep at night. They still take 2 naps a day, and the total naptime can sometimes be as much as 4 hours. Do have any suggestions on how to adjust either their naptime or bedtime so they will sleep past 6am? please???

Re: another sleep/nap question

  • I would be so glad to know too. Beau has been waking between 530 and 6am. So early! But by 6:30 at night, he is toast and cannot stay up past 7. He also does and needs 2 naps a day.

  • Lately my son has been getting up between 4:30 and 5 so I'm not any help.  He usually goes to bed between 6:30 & 7:30, but sometimes makes it until 8 or later.  I've learned that even if he goes to bed later he will still wake up around the same time and then takes an earlier nap the next day.  If I'm really lucky he will stay asleep until 6 if he goes to bed a little later.  However, my son has never been a sleeper and sometimes won't even nap at all during the day.  Daycare tells me he's usually the last one to fall asleep and the first one to wake up during nap time.

I don't know if you have room darkening blinds, but I've been considering trying it out to see if that will help.  It seems that he started waking up earlier when the sun started coming up earlier.  I'm going to give it a shot with black paper over his windows first to see if it even helps before I buy him new blinds.

It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!

we have room darkening shades but light still creeps in around the edges. We are going to put up room darkening curtains on top of the shades this weekend and hope they help!!!

  • I'd start pushing back their bed time by 15 minutes or so until you get them going to bed between 7:30- 8 pm.  Then if they still sleep 11 hrs you'll get the wake up time you want.

  • Anna is the exact same way right now. She sleeps 6:45pm until anywhere from 5:30 to 7am (7am is rare). 6ish is the norm in the morning. And she gets about 4 hours of naps with two naps per day, too. I really don't think there is much we can do, to be honest. If we push bedtime back, she still wakes up at the same time, so she just gets less sleep. Which is not the point. Right now, if she wakes up before 6am, we let her fuss and hope she goes back to sleep (she does about half the time). If it is after 6, we figure we are just stuck being up for the day. She just doesn't need 12 hours at night anymore, but still needs an early bedtime. We just hope this phase doesn't last too long!

  • Jake is also the same way. DH get's up with him in the morning though it's there time together..

But he has been waking at 530 and DH says that sometimes he will feed him at that time and then he will go right back to sleep; like this AM slept till 7AM..

Jake also still takes 2 2hr naps..This morning he only napped for 1/2hr in the car but that was because we were leaving baby class and then on the way to a playdate..and in the afternoons he usually naps for at 230-430..

I don't know how to really change it.  But I know Ferber does have some suggestions in his book..you might want to read it just to get an idea!
