How long to do potty treats?

So, I guess Abigail is officially potty trained. I did a chart and stickers/stamps plus m&ms plus a "big" prize at the end of the day for a zero accident day. (I know its a lot, but whatever works, right?) Well, she's slowly getting over putting stickers/stamps on her chart, but she still wants m&ms after going potty. How long do I do treats for? Until she quits asking for them? I'm afraid to take them away too soon and her regressing.

Tomorrow will be 1 week since starting.

  • I wouldn't rush it.  There were a few times when I thought we were all done and then he regressed.  So I'd keep it up for a few more weeks at least.  But I also wouldn't automatically do it all the time.  If she asks, I would comply.  Gavin still gets a reward for poops in the potty and he's been doing that consistently for 3-4 months.  He knows he has to go poop when we get home before he's allowed to play Mario.  He runs right in there and does his business and comes back out and says "play Mario?"  If you're getting away with M&M's then I would definitely keep it up.  So much cheaper than a gameboy Wink

  • We bought two packs of matchbox cars (so 10 cars total), and I think there is one left.  When they are gone, they're gone!  He's only been getting them for poop this week.

  • I was worried about the same thing. We did m&m's for pee pee and dum dums for poop. The first week or so we rewarded her every time. After that, only if she asked for it, which was quite a bit. Then one day the m&m's were all gone and she was fine with it. We kept up with the dum dums for poop, but only if she asked. Then it became part of every day life and she stopped asking. I'd say overall less than 1 month easy. I wasn't thrilled about it, but it was the only thing that worked ( she could have cared less about stickers) and just a means to an end.

I did it until they stopped asking.  But i was only giving like 2 m&m's for a successful potty, so it wasn't a huge amount anyway.
  • We give treats for poops only.  DD gets 3 chocolate covered raisins.  Although the last couple times she has negotiated her way up to 4.  We have no plans to stop, especially with a new baby on the way that will rock her world enough.

This. We were only giving 1 m&m for pee and 2 for poo. When we ran out, we happened to have a whole bunch of jellybeans lying around. And we STILL have them. So, if she poops, she requests a jellybean. No big deal. :)
