If you have a dedicated playroom in your home, what color is it?

I can't decide whether we should paint the playroom a bright "kid" color, or a neutral color to flow with the rest of the house.

The playroom is actually the loft area located upstairs, and if it matters the rest of the second floor hasn't been painted, it's still your boring "builder's beige" that you would see in new homes.

Any suggestions?

Since it's "open" to the rest of your home, I'd choose something like yellow or green...that would compliment the rest of your beige rooms, but still be fun for a kid! Or if you want to go bright perhaps orange!

I think Robbi has a chalk wall at her house too (if I remember correctly)...how fun for kiddies to be able to write on the wall and not get in trouble for it!

We DO have a chalk wall in J's play area. We love it! It's still kind of a novely (and J isn't quite old enough to appreciate it) so most adults that come over leave a note for us on it. The play area is just one corner of a big open space basement which also has a TV area and (will soon have a) craft/sewing area.

I agree with Lori, since it's open to the rest of the upstairs you might want to give some thought to what you envision for the other rooms so that even if it's "bright" and "fun" it doesn't compete or clash with adjoining areas. I have some pretty bright paint in areas of my house, but I picked them out all together so I knew there wouldn't be a harsh transition from one area to the other (tiffany blue nursery might contrast pretty badly with many colors but since it connects with a grey-blue painted living room and light green entry way it all flows pretty well).

We decided to keep the rest of the play area off-white since it's not really a room - just a corner of one big room.

Oooh, thanks for those suggestions Lori! The decals might work until I decide on a color! I also have a couple of swatches that I painted on one wall that I have to cover up. I have 4 shades of yellow and one blue I believe. DH thinks I'm crazy!

I love the idea of a chalk wall, but I'm not sure I have enough space....hmmmm something else to think about :P

I'd suggest neutral with decals and other accessories for pops of color. It would go with the rest of your house and you'd be able to change it as Cassie grows and her interests change.

I think this is the plan! Seems easiest and less stressful.

Ours is beige, very blah. BUT we have a foam tile floor of all colors, plus brightly colored Ikea furniture in there, so it actually works really well - I think if we had painted the walls too, it would just be too much. As it is, it's nice to have somewhere that your eye can rest, plus in our house the playroom is actually a dining room, and you have to walk through it to get to the living room, having the same color of walls throughout the area helps to keep it relatively cohesive with the rest of this level of the house.

pretty much this, but the walls are yellow (as is all the walls on the main floor), and it's the formal living room, not the dining room

I agree w/the advice and your decision to go w/something neutral and then to add in pops of color....the picture Lori posted is a great example
