Triplet mamas: Doctor questions.

I'm trying to figure out who/what I need to see as my OB for this pregnancy. We live in the middle of no-where. I called the two local (read 1 hour away) hospitals and neither of them handle triplet pregnancies. My RE suggested one near them, in Albany, 2 hours away, but I don't think they're covered by our insurance.

I'm just becoming rather overwhelmed with the doctor aspect. I have no idea what to look for or anything. I don't know if I could go see a regular OB and then if there are complications go to the specialist, or if I should just chalk up having to drive 2 hours for the specialist in Albany for each appt.

I don't have triplets but my take is to see the specialist all the time. You are having triplets which is automatically high risk-there will be issues that will most definitely come up during your pregnancy and it's probably best that one doctor is in charge of your care versus having to explain things to an OB and then the specialist all the time.

You should most definitely have an MFM assigned to you. In the beginning, I saw my regular OB for appointments and also saw an MFM for seperate appointments. The MFM did cervical length checks, growth checks on the babies, etc. As the pregnancy progressed and things got very complicated, my OB pretty much admitted that she did not know how to handle me and I was not happy with the MFM I had, so I found an MFM who specialized in triplet pregnancies and switched over. At that point I totally abandoned my OB and only saw the MFM. I think it is SO important to find a doctor who has experience with high-rish, multiple pregancies. IMO, even if you have to drive 2 hours to appointments, if the doctor is good, it's worth it. Good luck!

Not a triplet mama but I am a NP in a OB/GYN office. You most definitely need to see a MFM. I would call your insurance and ask them for a list of who is covered under your plan, they may want a referral or something but that shouldn't be a problem.

I was with a MFM for my entire pregnancy, never saw my OB. I agree with PP and check with insurance to see if there's someone reasonably close for you. I think I've heard of people having tandem appt's, the big ones with the MFM and routine ones with their OB so maybe you could work out something like that if it would make it easier for you travel wise.
