Success after IF

non-clicky do you speak Spanish?

I am sooooo sick of job-hunting and a lot of jobs now are requiring second languages, do most people speak Spanish?

  • Nope.  I took 3 years of Spanish in high school, so I can get around.  But I wouldn't say I speak it.

  • No, but I took 4 years of French in high school and 2 more in college.  I'm not fluent but I can get by.

  • I took 6 years of Spanish and can understand and read it better than I can speak it.  Many people here are fluent in Spanish though.

  • No ,but I wish I did.

I know in the Southwest it is more common and many kids go through K-12th grade learning a language.

this...and then I lived in italy for a bit...so now I speak "Spitalian"...its an awful mish-mash of both languages :)
  • I took 5 years of Spansih in grades 8-12, but I haven't taken any since and have never really had a place to practice it.  I remember a little bit and think I could catch on again if I was around it for a while, but I definitely couldn't claim to speak a second language.
It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!

  • Not fluently. Probably about at the level of a 3 or 4 year old, if that. Enough to get around in Spanish speaking countries but certainly wouldn't qualify for a job that required that I speak Spanish. Do you live somewhere with a significant spanish speaking population (TX, FL, NYC, CA)? If so, I can see why that might be a qualification for a lot of jobs.

  • I took 5 years in high school and a year in college, and that with the month i spent in Mexico, I was almost fluent. Then I just kinda stopped speaking it when I advanced through college and I lost most of it. I can still remember a little, but enough to be considered bi-lingual. I bet it would come back to me though if I had the exposure again.

  • No, but my DH does (non-native speaker) and he uses it at his job.  He'd like a new job in which he could use the skill but sadly there aren't too many around here!
Childhood cancer (DH) + chemo + radiation = 0 sperm.
    LO #1 - 1 unmedicated/self-monitored IUI w/ donor sperm.
    LO #2 - 1 m/c, 2 BFNs, 4th IUI worked (unmedicated/self-monitored with new donor sperm).
    Life is beautiful!

    Yes, but not fluently.

I took it starting in middle school and had Spanish all the way through college.

I also traveled to Spain after I graduated college, so that helped a bit, but I haven't taken any courses since (it has been 11 years since I graduated college.....).

  • I took 3 years in college and was pretty fluent, even used it a lot in my OT rotations. But I can barely remember much now.  I bet it would come back to me though. I would love to learn sign language too.  I love languages.  My SLP friend who was also hearing impaired knew sign language and when she would drink she would suddenly forget to talk and would sign. It was awsome. I need to remind her of that.

Funny story:  DD is learning spanish in preschool and the other day she came home and said mommy do you know that agua is a type of spanish water.  Ha, I laughed pretty hard after that one.

Hey I just met you, and you're my baby. This is your family, we're kind of crazy...Lilypie Kids Birthday tickersLilypie - (tl9S)Lilypie - (zrx8)imageimageimage

  • I used to be pretty good right after college and a year in AZ. But now I only catch about every 5th word I hear and can order at restaurants. That is about it.

  • Well I live in South FLa...I am the minority cause I am not bilingual and don't speak Spanish. It makes me laugh when we are out somewhere and they automatically speak to me in Spanish..I mean I look like the whitest Jewish girl.

But eveyone down here is biligual or trilingual..we have a huge Hatian population as well..I hope that if we live here for much longer that Jake will also pick up a lot of spanish..

  • I speak it fairly well and understand it and can read it even better. I took 4 years of it which gave me a decent foundation but I've learned more from my DH (fluent-it's his first language) and his family (Spanish is mostly spoken when we are visiting--they live in Miami). I'm excited that DS will be fluent.
