3rd Trimester

I'm growing a giant...

I just had an ultra-sound today, 34 weeks along and the current estimated weight of my baby girl is 6lbs 14 oz! Yikes! This is making me very nervous and scared abouthow big she will be. I don't have diabetes or anything. I guess I just grow em big. I forgot to ask my doc before leaving how much they normally gain in the last few months...

What do you all know about giant babies or how much weight they gain in the end?

Thanks!

  • I had a growth u/s with ds around 35wks. He was weighing 7lbs. I delivered him (yup vaginally) at 40wks and he weighed 9.2lb. I was told the last month or so they can gain 1/2lb a week. So my u/s was right on target.

  • Me too! Tallen is 6 lbs 8 oz at 34 weeks...I am kind of worried about how big he is going to end up being if he carries to 40.

  • The weight estimates during the ultrasounds can be up to 2lbs off either way. I had an u/s at 38 weeks and they est. DD to be 7lbs 8 oz, and she was born 40w2d weighing in at only 6lbs 12oz. According to my belly measurements I was measuring past my due date at 40 weeks. My OB told me I would probably have an 8-9lb baby and she was so small! Don't worry about it too much.. it could be wrong. Relax and try to enjoy the rest of your pregnancy :)

I had a growth u/s at 36 1/2 weeks and the baby was measuring 7lbs 4ozs.  I thought this was huge but both the tech and doctor said it's nothing to worry about.  The baby will gain about 1/2lb a week so, by 40 weeks, he could be 9.5 lbs and the doctor said that is fine.

  • I just had an u/s too - at 33.5 weeks they estimate my baby is already 6 lbs 1 oz.  I don't buy it.  I had an u/s around 35 weeks with my first baby (same office performed it), and they told me she was 7 lbs 4 oz.  She was born 4 weeks later at 7 lbs 3.7 oz.  So either she didn't gain ANY weight in 4 weeks (extremely doubtful) or their estimates are a bit generous.  Even the doctor I discussed the results with this time said, "yeah, I wouldn't worry about that, their measurments tend to exaggerate."  It would be nice if they would tell you their margin for error when they give you the results...

My  doc said it could beup to a pound off (in either direction) thatbeing said I 'measured ahead' but I knew it was because my baby would be a little bigger. I had her epi free and she was 9lbs 11oz.

Oh and My birth weight was12lbs9oz, if only my dd had been one more ounce!! (my mom had me natural/epi free)
