Do I or don't I?

DD has had pretty yucky eczema on her face since she was 3 weeks old.  It's clearing up now but still flares up sometimes.  I am thinking that maybe it is time for us to go with allergy testing.  I'm a little nervous about the cost of it though, as we haven't met our stupid deductible yet.  Also, DD1 had a wheat sensitivity that she outgrew shortly after 1 so I am wondering whether I should move forward with a possible allergy that may or may not be outgrown soon anyhow.  If it matters, and makes any sense, I am thinking it is a dairy allergy.  She can breastfeed just fine and have things with milk as an ingredient but cheese, sour cream, etc seem to irritate (or maybe just coincidently happens at the same time as a flare up?).

  • Do you have co-pays on your insurance? We havent met our deductible yet either, but the allergist is considered a specialist, so I just had to pay our co-pay ($25) for DD's allergist appointment. Any testing they did during that appt was covered under the co-pay. I did have to pay a little to have bloodwork done, but it wasn't much. Have you spoken go your pedi about your concerns? I would start there. They may have to give you a referral anyway.

  • the co-pay does suck! mine is $40.. even when i had a follow up, i had to pay that. so if i was you i would make an appointment and at the appointment ask if you can do the follow up via the phone (follow up, meaning she'll tell you the results) since you can't afford the co-pays.

But i honestly would give up my cable, phone, and other things just to take my child. To know what my child is allergic to b/c you don't know how serious it can be. You pray it's nothing but if it is something -it's so much better to know.  And why have her suffer with a nasty eczema. Also -having an epipen in your hands in case it is serious -is life saving.

good luck and hopefully your child does not have a full blown allergy and maybe is just a little sensitive since she can handle your milk. most kids that can handle their moms milk have a very mild allergy. But that's for the doctor to find out.

We have to meet our deductible before the copay matters and we are still far from our deductible so we would have to pay the entire amount for the allergy testing.  Both the pedi and the dermatologist said that we could go the allergy testing route but they didn't feel it was 100% necessary and neither one felt I should even bother with an elimination diet to see if what I was eating was bothering her.  We have a few other specialists that we need to see as well and our insurance may be changing in the very near future.  I am really hoping that it changes for the better.
