Food Allergy

Introducing a food that LO used to be allergic to

I just got our blood testing results back from the allergist.  She tested negative (<0.10) to rice.  The last time she was tested (9 months ago) rice was 3.0.  I am scared to feed her anything rice-based, but I would like to give it a try.

Do you feel comfortable giving your LO something they used to be allergic to?

Re: Introducing a food that LO used to be allergic to

  • I was told by our allergist that once his levels reach a certain low mark (differs depending on the allergen) we will food challenge in a clinical setting.

These are the numbers I was given...

    Food Challenge Stats
      95% NPV
    Milk  0.8
    Egg 90% at .6
    Peanut 85% <.35

The formatting got a little wonky but what this says is a <.35 for peanut only gives you an 85% negative predictive value.  That means 15% chance for a reaction.

Are you reintroducing on your own?  That would make me really nervous.

That is what I was wondering.  I haven't talked to the doctor yet, so I don't know what he will want to do.  Makes me nervous either way!

  • Such an exciting and scary place to be in.  I think my allergist and pediatrician would want to know what kind of reaction she had in the past.  For example, if she had rice before and it gave her a rash, they would be more likely to let me try it on my own (I think) versus an ana reaction or vomiting.  I hope they give you some direction and soon!

Very exciting, but also very scary!  She only "had" rice when I nursed her.  I didn't know she was allergic at the time.  I stopped nursing her at 9.5 months which was right when we found out about the rice allergy and then she went on Neocate.  So, no reaction to go from!

  • first of all -that is fantastic!!!!!!  congrats!

My son outgrew sesame and i have yet tried giving it to him but we don't avoid it as much anymore.  We give him bread that was near sesame. But nothing with sesame on it. probably more of a habit than anything else.

I would really just start off with couple of grains of rice and just build it up.. not for her but for your own comfort.

Also -i make rice in milk instead of water so there is extra vitamins.  and it tastes sweeter.

  • yay for potentially outgrowing an allergy!!  That's awesome!

I would only do a food challenge under a doctor's supervision.  That way if anything would go wrong- you're in the right place to get immediate assistance.  If the dr. gives you the go-ahead I'd totally do a food challenge.
